Women's Ice Hockey Loses Two Goal Lead, Falls in Overtime to LIU

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. -- It was close but no dice for Post University Women's Ice Hockey against Long Island Univeristy (LIU) on Friday afternoon down at the Northwell Health Ice Center. After taking a 2-0 lead into the second half of the second period, a pair of power-play goals for the Sharks helped them force overtime where graduate defenseman Anna Fairman netted the game-winning goal to complete the comeback, 3-2, over the Eagles.

THE BASICS

Post University 2, LIU 3

Post University (3-11-1, 3-7-1 NEWHA)

LIU (8-5-1, 8-2-1 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior forward Julia Wysocki opened the scoring just over 14 minutes into the contest as sophomore forward Celena Mickevicius and freshman forward Rowyn Ringor set her up with the shot and score past graduate goalie Abbie Thompson. Both Thompson and junior goalie Hannah Saunders made 10 saves each for their teams in the opening frame while the Sharks would be stymied on their lone power-play opportunity in which Saunders had two stops.

Adding onto their lead was Ringor at the beginning of the second period with the help of Wysocki to give the Eagles their first multi-goal lead in program history over the Sharks, 2-0, as well as their first two-goal game against LIU in what was now the 17th all-time matchup between the programs. However, penalties would come back to haunt Post starting with senior defenseman Angeline Pitter's interference call leading to LIU's first goal from junior defenseman Emma Mortl in the second.

Despite only six shots from both sides in the third, Wysocki's roughing penalty would be the undoing of the lead as senior forward Jeannie Wallner's power-play goal with 6:29 remaining in regulation would force overtime. Wallner would help finish the comeback for the Sharks in the overtime frame as well, assisting Fairman on her shot just inside the left post past Saunders, who came up with a few crucial saves down the stretch of the third and in the extra session to keep Post alive before they fell 3-2.
