Rowyn Ringor Scores First Collegiate Goal, Women's Ice Hockey Falls 2-1 Against Assumption

SHELTON, Conn. – Freshman forward Rowyn Ringor scored her first collegiate goal early on in the first period for Post University Women's Ice Hockey in their home matchup against Assumption University on Friday night, but two goals from junior forward Emma Gurnell would sink the Eagles to 2-3-0 in conference play with a 2-1 defeat at the Sports Center of Connecticut.

THE BASICS

Post University 1, Assumption University 2

Post University (2-7-0, 2-3-0 NEWHA)

Assumption University (1-6-2, 1-3-1 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Just over a minute into the game a cross-ice pass from senior defenseman Sajel Desai found the stick of senior forward Julia Wysocki near the neutral zone. Carrying it around the defense, Wysocki located Ringor with open space, and she would rifle it over the top of graduate goalie Carissa Mudrak to give the Eagles only their second lead in the first period of the season.

However, Mudrak would settle down as would the Greyhound defense rather quickly to the tune of only allowing 15 total shots on goal for the entirety of the game and 14 shots on goal after Ringor's score. Meanwhile, on the other end, Assumption would make the most of turnovers to score the next two goals and ultimately win the game.

Despite trailing 1-0 after one, the Greyhounds would have 14 shots against junior goalie Hannah Saunders who stopped everything she faced. But in the second it would be a different story as Gurnell netted her first goal of the evening off a defensive zone turnover by senior defenseman Caisey Van Den Oetelaar just over six minutes into the frame.

Saunders would still make 12 saves in the second and a defensive stalemate would take place in the final 20-minute session in which Gurnell would strike again to give Assumption the lead for good. While both teams would combine for six shots on goal each, sophomore defenseman Katelyn Prive and graduate forward Mikaela Langbacka would move the puck ahead to Gurnell and the junior would do the rest.

Moving around both Post defenders in the offensive zone, Gurnell got herself into a one-on-one situation with Saunders and beat her for the eventual game-winning goal. While the Eagles would control the puck in the offensive end for the final two minutes or so and have a trio of shots against Mudrak, nothing would get by the graduate goalie who picked up her first win of the season making 14 saves in the 2-1 win for the Greyhounds.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Rowyn Ringor scored her first collegiate goal in the first period of the game bringing her point total for the season up to four as she recorded three assists in her first eight games entering the day

  • In the third time in the five all-time matches between Post University and Assumption University, the final score was decided by a single goal – The other two times were a 0-0 tie and a 3-0 win for the Greyhounds last year
  • For the second straight game, Post University did not allow a power-play goal after allowing one in the five straight games before that – The Eagles were a perfect 2-for-2 on the penalty kill with both opportunities coming in the second for Assumption University
