Women's Ice Hockey Blanked By St. Thomas in 2024-25 Season Opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Two early goals for the University of St. Thomas as well as some defensive lapses for Post University Women's Ice Hockey in the first game of the season for both teams saw the Tommies come out on top, 7-0, over the Eagles in the first game behind the bench for first-year Head Coach Pat Bingham. Junior goalie Hannah Saunders made 24 saves for Post while junior goalie Hali Lawrence made 14 saves in relief of her in the third period.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, University of St. Thomas 7

Post University (0-1-0)

University of St. Thomas (1-0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tommies would get off to a hot start on their home ice rattling off 25 total shots, 16 of which reached Saunders in net compared to just seven total shots and five on goal for the Eagles against graduate goalie Calla Frank. Sophomore forward Keara Parker got the scoring started, cleaning up a loose puck in front of Saunders who initially attempted to go for it before falling back and getting beat to the left side.

Sophomore forward Madison Brown netted the second goal of the first period just over a minute and a half later on a rush down the ice by the St. Thomas offense. Junior forward Saide Lindsay and sophomore forward Ella Boerger assisted in helping Brown go just under the crossbar on Saunders to take that two-goal lead. While the Tommies ended the period ahead by two, sophomore forward Macy Peterson and sophomore defenseman Jodie Rose each had a breakaway attempt against Frank and in their attempt to go five-hole were halted, keeping the score at 2-0 after one.

Unlucky bounces in the second period would give St. Thomas two more goals as sophomore forward Cara Sajevic's shot toward the goal was redirected off the stick of senior defenseman Sajel Desai, hopping over Saunders head just about six minutes into the frame. Senior forward Maddie Jurgensen would become the fourth different scorer of the night for the Tommies as a scramble in front for the loose puck found her stick with Saunders sprawled out on the opposite side of the net for the open opportunity.

Each team would have two power play opportunities with neither cashing in during the second, but the Post offense was completely silenced as they were unable to manufacture any shots in that 20-minute period compared to 22 total shots for St. Thomas.

With Lawrence taking over the netminding for the final period, the Tommies would attack with three goals as senior forward Lauren Stensile recorded her third point of the night with an unassisted goal followed by Parker's second goal of the evening and the first collegiate goal of freshman forward Chloe Boreen's collegiate career in a 7-0 win for St. Thomas over Post.
