In Senior Send Off, Women's Soccer Picks Up Crucial Conference Win Against Lincoln University

WATERBURY, Conn. –  It was a game that Post University Women's Soccer had to have on Saturday afternoon against Lincoln University as the conference matches begin to dwindle down in the regular season and the Eagles fight for postseason contention. Behind six saves for senior goalkeeper Hannah Marriott on Senior Day, Post would come away with a big 3-1 win over the Lions at LaMoy Field to get their second conference win of the season and move one game behind eighth-place Bridgeport at least in the win column.

THE BASICS

Post University 3, Lincoln University 1

Post University (2-9-0, 2-5-0 CACC)

Lincoln University (3-8-0, 0-6-0 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
A rather low first half of shooting on net for both sides tied at three in shots on goal while Post had an overwhelming 11-4 margin in overall shots. However, two of those three shots would get by sophomore goalkeeper Ariel Reyes in the 36th minute when junior defender Zoe Mier fired from nearly 35 yards out with a high arching ball that got over the head of Reyes to give Post a 1-0 lead.

Just before the end of the first half, senior forward Alyssa Hebb continued her career season with her seventh goal of the season when senior defender Bianca Stiles fluttered the ball into the box. While it was initially headed away by a Lincoln defender, Hebb would find her footing on it and beat Reyes with the shot to put the Eagles ahead by two heading into the break.

But the Lions would not go away quietly as sophomore defender Keilani Broadnax had a long shot of her own in the 63rd minute of the match that beat Marriott and cut the Lincoln deficit in half, 2-1. That goal came just a few minutes after Hebb missed a penalty kick followed a yellow card in the box by Reyes in an attempt to halt the Post rush.

Moments after Broadnax cut the deficit in half, another Lions foul inside the box led to sophomore forward Jordyn Calas taking the penalty kick opportunity and connecting on the left side of the goal mouth to give the Eagles some breathing room in the eventual 3-1 win.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Alyssa Hebb now has seven goals on the season and has scored in each of the last two matches for Post – The seven goals is a career-high for a single season for Hebb
  • For the first time this season, Post University allowed no corner kicks against their opponent while having seven corner kicks of their own in the match
  • When scoring three goals in a match this season, Post University is now 2-1 on the season with wins over Felician and Lincoln while their sole loss came against Saint Anselm in their season opener
  • This was only the second all-time matchup for Post University against Lincoln University as the Eagles move to 2-0-0 against the Lions who they have outscored 5-1 overall

WHO'S NEXT
Post University heads on the road for two matches starting with a mid-week matchup against Dominican (N.Y.) on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 PM. Last year, the teams tied at two all at LaMoy Field after Stella Koster's game-tying goal in the 74th minute for the Lady Chargers, making the all-time series currently sit at 10-9-3 in favor of Dominican (N.Y.).
