Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Michael Vesci, Director of Athletic Communications

Women's Ice Hockey Hangs Tough for Two Periods, Falls to #8 Colgate University on the Road

HAMILTON, N.Y. – It was one of those games that contrary to what the outcome on the scoreboard may say, it does not tell the full story of the game. For the better part of two periods, Post University Women's Ice Hockey hung around with Colgate University who is ranked eighth nationally in the latest USCHO Poll, trailing just 2-0 heading into the final frame before four third-period goals for the Raiders helped them break away and deliver a 6-1 defeat to the Eagles.

THE BASICS

Post University 1, #8 Colgate University 6

Post University (1-4-0)

#8 Colgate University (4-3-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite multiple opportunities to score in the opening frame, Post hung tough against the onslaught of offense Colgate looked to generate in front of their net. Junior goalie Hali Lawrence made some key stops to keep the score knotted at zero before a score inside of two minutes by sophomore defenseman Jaimee Spring that deflected off Lawrence's glove gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead after one. But the one goal would not take away from the solid frame the junior had in net, making 20 saves on 21 shots taken by Colgate while the Eagle offense was only able to manufacture five on goal against senior goalie Hannah Murphy.

As the game wore on, the Post defense would clamp down on the offensive opportunities that the Raiders would have as the shot totals decreased for the opposition each period while the offensive opportunities for the Eagles remained equal throughout. Fifth-year forward Kristyna Kaltounkova would be the next scorer for Colgate with a nifty move to get the puck past Lawrence and give her team a 2-0 lead after two as that goal would also come in the later stages of the period as the first one did.

Blitzing for four third-period goals on just nine total shots on goal, the Raiders would get two from sophomore forward Kaia Malachino and one from both junior forward Elyssa Biederman and junior Sara Stewart to pull away from the Eagles. Sophomore defenseman Jodie Rose would get the lone goal of the evening for Post when she went crashing into Murphy in the net after she turned away a shot before the Raiders tacked on their final goal of the game in the 6-1 loss for the Eagles.
