Women's Ice Hockey Drops First Conference Matchup of Season Against Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Hannah Saunders made 20 saves on 21 shots for Post University Women's Ice Hockey, but freshman goalie Jordana DeMarinis stole the show in her first collegiate start for Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon. Making 34 saves in a shutout effort, DeMarinis helped lead the Purple Knights to their first win in 44 games on a late third-period goal by freshman defenseman Julia Chedel, as the Eagles split their first conference weekend with a 1-0 loss.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, Saint Michael's College 1

Post University (1-3-0, 1-1-0 NEWHA)

Saint Michael's College (1-5-0, 1-1-0 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the first two periods of play, both sides were quiet on the scoreboard, but had their opportunities to score first in the affair. The Purple Knights would manufacture four power plays in the first period alone but get just five shots on goal in the nearly eight minutes of man-up time they had. In all, Saint Michael's had seven power plays in the game, bringing their weekend total to a gaudy 12 overall while the Post penalty kill stood tall for a majority of each matchup.

On the Eagles' side, they would have a trio of power plays that came in the second and third periods, all of which would be halted by DeMarinis in net as they rifled off six shots in that five minutes and 20 seconds of man-up time that they had. While again, the Post penalty kill stood strong for most of the game, the penalties would come back to bite them finally in the third when Chedel scored on Saunders with the help of junior forward Elisabeth Gerebi and just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

Soon after, Post would have another power play after a crosscheck by freshman defenseman Ellie Newpower as well as another on a trip by senior Grace Canterbury, but would be unable to break through with the equalizer. Playing with Saunders pulled from the net creating a 6-on-5 advantage, senior forward Maddy Noonan committed a crosschecking penalty, wiping out the man-up chance in the closing minute as DeMarinis got the 1-0 shutout win and snapped the 43-game winless streak for Saint Michael's.
