Men's Ice Hockey Unable to Solve Southern New Hampshire Defense on Friday

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- It was another tightly played game for Post University Men's Ice Hockey in their first of two games on the road against Southern New Hampshire, but the bounces would not go in the Eagles' favor as they were shut out by the Penmen, 1-0, on Friday evening. The shutout was the first time Post has been shut out by Southern new Hampshire since a 5-0 loss back on February 4th, 2020.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, Southern New Hampshire University 1

Post University (2-14-1, 1-10-1 NE10)

Southern New Hampshire University (6-10-2, 4-6-1 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was the night of the goalies as freshman goalie Colin Berke went head-to-head with Post junior goalie Zach Richards with neither defense willing to concede a goal. A perfect first period for both sides saw a combined 22 saves while the Eagles held a slight 12-10 edge in the shots on goal category while both sides also had two power-play chances which yielded a combined seven shots on net.

Two more power-play opportunities in the second for the Penmen would eventually result in the lone goal of the game as sophomore forward Brendan Lynch beat Richards with a shot from sophomore forward Ryan Pomopselli and junior defenseman Ryan Clear with 4:01 to go. While Richards would be perfect the rest of the way, so would Berke which made Lynch's goal the difference maker in the affair.

But Post would not go down without a fight, manufacturing four power-plays in the final 20 minutes that generated 14 total shots that Berke was up to the challenge for. With Richards pulled from the goal and the Eagles on a power-play, Post would play 6-on-4 for the final 1:49 of regulation and have three shots, two of which would be saved by Berke while the other went wide. But Berke would complete his perfect night with 39 saves against the Eagles to lead Southern New Hampshire to the 1-0 shutout win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Colin Berke picked up the shutout win for Southern New Hampshire after stopping all 39 shots he faced -- It was Berke's third win of the season and first career shutout
  • Zach Richards had a solid evening in net after stopping 30 of 31 shots in the loss -- This was the second time this season in which Richards has allowed only one goal
  • With 24 faceoff wins, Patrick Murphy had a season-high in that category as well as a career-high -- Murphy was 24-for-33 overall in the game
  • This was the first time since January 20th, 2023 in which Post University took on Southern New Hampshire on the road as the last four matchups were at home for the Eagles -- Post had won two of their last three games against the Penmen on the road entering the day
