PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – It has not been easy for Post University Men's Soccer in the early going of this season, especially when its come to conference play for the Eagles, but the 20th-ranked team in the nation continues to find a way to win. After knocking off Wilmington University at home last weekend, Post would do the same on the road against Jefferson University on Friday afternoon with another 1-0 victory, improving to 2-0-0 in conference matchups this season.
THE BASICS
#20 Post University 1, Jefferson University 0
Post University (3-1-2, 2-0-0 CACC)
Jefferson University 2-5-0, 1-2-0 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Defense was the name of the game in this one as neither side held an overwhelming advantage on the pitch when it came to the final totals in the box score. Despite outshooting the Rams, 5-2 in the first half, only one shot combined would reach net for either team off the foot of junior defender Paul Ludwig in the 43rd minute which would be stopped by graduate goalkeeper Matteo Crescente.
It would not be until the 54th minute that either team would record another shot as Crescente denied sophomore forward Aritz Uriate, who had the game-winning goal against Wilmington University a week ago. However, the breakthrough goal for the Eagles would come just three minutes after that as graduate midfielder Andrea Berti was fed a pass by graduate midfielder Nick Anagnostiadis in the 57th minute who beat Crescente and gave Post University the lead, 1-0.
It was all elementary for junior goalkeeper Soren Jensen throughout the entirety of the match as he would face just two shots across the 90 minutes of play from Jefferson, both of which he turned away in the 76th and 79th minute to hold onto the Eagles slim lead and help them improve to 3-1-2 on the season and 2-0-0 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
BY THE NUMBERS
- In total, Post University outshot Jefferson University by a 13-6 margin and held a 4-2 edge in shots on goal
- Both teams combined for just six corner kicks in the match with the Eagles holding a 4-2 advantage in that category
- Matteo Crescente finished the match with three saves while Soren Jensen posted two saves in his second shutout of the season
- The game-winning goal was the third of Andrea Berti's career, all three of his goals have been the game-winner for the Eagles
WHO'S NEXT
The Eagles continue their road trip with a matchup against University of Bridgeport scheduled for 6:00 PM on Tuesday night in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Last year was the first time in 12 years in which both squads faced off against one another with the match ending in a 1-1 tie, the first year in which the Purple Knights, who were picked to finish third in the conference this season, were a part of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
