Sweep Victory! Women's Volleyball Tames Cougars, Move to 2-0 in Conference Play

CALDWELL, N.J.  -- For Post University Women's Volleyball, everything was clicking on Tuesday night in the second conference matchup of the year on the road against Caldwell University. Attacking at a tremendous .352 hitting percentage on the evening as a team and behind the fourth consecutive double-digit kill game for junior outside hitter Caley Harper, the Eagles moved to 2-0 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a 3-0 sweep of the Cougars to begin their two-game week.

THE BASICS

Post University 3, Caldwell University 0

Post University (2-9, 2-0 CACC)
Caldwell University (1-6, 1-2 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set would be defined by a back-and-forth battle, similar to what was seen by the Eagles against Bloomfield College in their opening conference matchup last week. Despite jumping out to a quick 3-1 lead, Post would find themselves going through five lead changes and seven ties en route to a 13-13 tie where a 3-0 run highlighted by two of Harper's 12 kills on the evening would help define the remainder of the set. Three straight Eagle errors threatened to put Caldwell back into the set when they tied it up at 19, but a 3-0 run in response which began on a Caldwell error helped Post snag the first set, 25-22.

An uncontested second allowed the Eagles to remain fully in control throughout after falling behind 2-1 as Post would never look back following their 7-2 run which made the most of three Caldwell errors along the way. From there, a stretch in which three service aces from junior setter Maria Fernanda Branco and sophomore libero Alyssa Groves as well as kills from four different Eagles helped push them ahead 16-7, and eventually lead by as many as 12 points, 20-8, when they went on a 7-1 run. Quelling an 8-0 response from the Cougars, senior setter Izabella Rae and Harper tacked on a kill each while Caldwell committed four errors to stop their momentum and give the Eagles the 25-17 second set victory.

Much like the first two sets, the third was also defined by an Eagle run as they trailed 6-5 and ripped off a 5-0 run with two kills from Harper and the emerging senior middle hitter Keyah Sinclair to help Post go up for good in the set and eventually win the match with a 25-19 win. Never able to threaten the four-point lead, Caldwell would get to within two points twice with the last being an 11-9 margin before the Eagles were able to pull a little further away, leading by as many as six points prior to the two teams trading points and junior middle hitter shutting the door on the 2-0 conference start for Post with a kill.  BY THE NUMBERS
  • Caley Harper has now notched double-digit kills in four straight matches after adding 12 more on Tuesday while attacking at .409 for the match
  • Flying under the radar, Hannah Brandt has recorded a hitting percentage above .400 for the fourth straight game while getting five-plus kills in each of those performances
  • Finishing with a hitting percentage of .600, Izabella Rae had her second-highest hit percentage of her career when having 10-plus total attacks in a match, Rae also had a team-high 22 assists which is a season-high
  • Recording 74 total attacks, Caldwell attacked at just .176 on the evening with 15 errors
WHO'S NEXT Post University returns home on Thursday night for a conference matchup against Dominican (N.Y.) at 7:00 PM inside the Drubner Center. The Lady Chargers will enter the match with a 1-0 record in CACC play so far this season while the Eagles look to continue their winning ways against a team they have beaten in 13 of their last 15 matchups. The two sides split their matches last year with the home team being the victor in each match.
