Men's Soccer Blanked by #1 Franklin Pierce in 2023 Home Opener

WATERBURY, Conn. -- Less than 24 hours after being postponed, Post University Men's Soccer made history when they became the first athletic program at the university to host a nationally-ranked number one team and defending champion for a match. That team they faced was Franklin Pierce University, winners of 35 consecutive matches heading into the day and riding a streak in which they were 51-1-2 in their last 54 games.

On Monday morning, the Ravens would not be denied win number 36 in a row as they used two first half goals to propel themselves by the Eagles by a final score of 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Out of the gate, the Ravens would come flying on the pitch in the offensive zone and a controversial foul call in the box would lead to a penalty kick for the visitors less than 2 1/2 minutes into the match. Graduate midfielder Jeronimo Ferrando Ferri would take the kick for the Ravens and beat junior goalkeeper Soren Jensen to the left side for the 1-0 lead.

A few rushes by the Eagles down the offensive end of the field would be quelled by the Franklin Pierce defense which would be turned away by sophomore goalkeeper Diego Montoya Casillas shortly after the first goal of the game as junior defender Omar Florindo and graduate midfielder Andrea Berti both gave Post a few chances to tie up the match.

However, turnovers would prove costly for the Eagles as a defensive zone turnover would lead to an odd man rush the other way for the Ravens and sophomore midfielder Antonio Lampreia Lima would hit senior midfielder Joao Valente with a pass that helped extend Franklin Pierce's edge to two goals, heading into halftime.

In the 69th minute, it would be another Post turnover on defense that led to a right side chance for the Ravens as junior midfielder Caleb Williams hit a streaking graduate forward Alvaro Rey Mira down the sideline. Rey Mira would lift a shot over the left side of Jensen and into the lower left corner of the net to ice the game for the Ravens who took a three-goal lead and handed the Eagles their first loss of the season. BY THE NUMBERS
