Calas Can Do It! Jordyn Calas Leads Women's Soccer to First Win of Season

WATERBURY, Conn. – Battling the elements has been a staple for Post University Women's Soccer in the early part of the 2023 season and Sunday afternoon against D'Youville University was no different. Not one, but two lightning delays would hamper the Eagles as the weather went from hot and humid the other day to cool and rainy as thunderstorms pushed through the area on Sunday afternoon.

But after nearly 278 scoreless minutes to start the season, Post University would pour on the goals in the first half en route to their first victory of the season, 3-1.

THE BASICS

Post University 3, D'Youville University 1

Post University (1-3-0)

D'Youville University (0-3-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Following a 30 minute delay to the start of the match due to lightning, freshman forward Jordyn Calas finally broke the scoreless drought for the Eagles in the eighth minute as she raced down the field before beating sophomore goalkeeper Kailie Regan to her left side and was rushed by her teammates as the Farmingville, New York native netted her first collegiate goal.

With just over 20 minutes remaining in the first half, lightning would strike again and force the teams into the locker room for another lengthy delay before returning to the field around 2:15 PM. Even though they say lightning does not strike twice, it would do so in the form of two goals by the Eagles as Calas netted her second goal of the afternoon just before a shortened halftime break.

Coming out of that break, the McGee sisters would team up for the third Eagle goal as senior forward Hailey McGee skipped a pass off the back of her foot to senior defender Amber McGee in front of the net. Amber McGee would fire a high, hard shot that ricocheted off the cross bar and into the left side of the goal mouth in the 48th minute to give Post University an added cushion.

Despite a few late rushed by D'Youville, freshman goalkeeper Aryn Nisbet would stand tall in goal, making eight saves on nine shot attempts. The lone goal the Saints would get would come in the 82nd minute after an Eagle turnover led to a goal by sophomore midfielder Izzy Deachman into the high left corner past a sprawling Nisbet.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The two-goal game by Jordyn Calas was the first multi-score game for an Eagle since Hailey McGee scored two goals against Wilmington University on September 24, 2022
  • Aryn Nisbet earned her first collegiate win after making eight saves in the match for Post University
  • Despite controlling the scoreboard, the Eagles outshot the Saints, 15-14, but trailed 9-7 in shots on goal
  • Post University is now 2-0-0 against D'Youville all-time, winning by a combined score of 4-1
