19th-Ranked Men's Soccer Opens Season with Tie at AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –  Opening up their 2023 season with high hopes of a fifth consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title, 19th-ranked Post University used an 87th minute goal from graduate midfielder Gentian Selimi to work a 1-1 tie against American International College (AIC) on Thursday afternoon in Springfield.  THE BASICS #19 Post University 1, American International College 1  #19 Post University (0-0-1)
American International College (0-0-1) HOW IT HAPPENED The Yellow Jackets would net the first goal of the tight affair just 12 minutes into the first half after a foul by graduate midfielder Andrea Berti led to a penalty kick for junior forward Simba Pelletier. Pelletier would beat junior goalkeeper Soren Jensen to make it a 1-0 match in favor of AIC.

Outside of the penalty kick, it was a relatively quiet first half for both teams as they would combine for just three total shots on goal with AIC holding a 2-1 edge in that category. However, the Eagles would come out aggressive in the second half in hopes of knotting up the game or stealing away a late-stage victory.

Pummeling senior goalkeeper Lucas Morales-Fernandez in net to the tune of eight shots on goal over the final 45 minutes, they would finally break through with the equalizer after Berti made up for his foul earlier on in the game, finding Selimi with a pass and the game-tying goal with just over 3:30 left in the match.

That is how the match would end as Post tied AIC in their 2023 opener while outshooting the Yellow Jackets 13-8 overall and 10-3 in shots on goal.    BY THE NUMBERS
  • A total of five yellow cards and one red card would be issued in the game with Post picking up two while AIC notched the other three and the red card late in the second half
  • In addition to his one goal, Gentian Selimi totaled up six shots on the afternoon with five of them reaching the net
  • Post University is now 3-0-1 in their last four games against AIC after dropping the first five head-to-heads

WHO'S NEXT Post University will return to Springfield on Saturday afternoon to take on Adelphi University on the campus of AIC at 4:00 PM. In their matchup last season, the Eagles fell to the Panthers, 2-0, on the road in Garden City, New York. In the all-time matchup, Post is 1-2-1 against Adelphi.
