SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The beginning was the same, but the ending was different this time for Post University Men's Soccer in their game against Adelphi University on Saturday as the 19th-nationally ranked Eagles came back from a 1-0 first half deficit to score three goals led by junior forward
Francisco Sousa's two goals to take home their first win of the season, 3-1.
THE BASICS
#19 Post University 3, Adelphi University 1
#19 Post University (1-0-1)
Adelphi University (0-2-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Like in the AIC match two days ago, the Eagles found themselves in an early 1-0 hole after a penalty kick was awarded to the Panthers in the 20th minute. Senior forward Victor Castel buried the shot by junior goalkeeper
Soren Jensen to put Adelphi on top, a lead they would hold going into the second half despite being outshot 8-5 overall and 5-3 in shots on goal.
However, momentum would quickly swing in favor of Post in the second half as a second yellow card issued to graduate defender Paul Todaro in the 60th minute helped lead to the first goal of the season, a game-tying goal, for junior defender
Omar Florindo. The rest of the work on the scoreboard would be done by the junior Sousa to help give the Eagles the lead and a cushion to earn their first win of the season.
In the 66th minute, Sousa would convert on a goal after receiving a pass from senior defender
Felix Nassen to give Post thier first lead of the game and lead in a match of the season. Earning his second point of the day, Florindo would find Sousa in the 86th minute for his second goal of the match, giving the Eagles a two-goal lead, 3-1, and the victory.
After the match, Head Coach
Ted Haley commented on his team's performance this past week saying, ""I am very proud of the boys and how resilient we were this weekend. Both matches we went behind, but we never lost our focus.
Haley went on to say, "Today's match we had to deal with lots of pressure and found ways to play really good soccer and score great goals. What is nice is that everyone is contributing with veteran players and new players getting the job done."
