Baseball Uses The Long Ball In Sweep Of Felician In CACC Finale; Caron Sets Hit Mark

Flemington, N.J. – The Post University baseball team wrapped up its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) season with a sweep of Felician on Tuesday, taking game one, 11-9 and game two, 9-5.

Post is now 33-14 overall and finished their CACC season at 22-3 and a North Division title. They have also won five straight. Felician moved to 19-28 overall and 12-11 in the CACC.

Game one featured seven home runs between the two teams, four of which came from the Eagles.

The Eagles led 5-1 after the top of the second, scoring two runs in the first on a two-run single by Danny Gill. In the second, Matthew Soloman doubled to open the inning and was driven in by Michael Pavelchak, putting Post up, 3-1. The next batter, Jimmy Brennan then followed with a two-run homer, his fifth of the season to put the Eagles up, 5-1.

However, Felician got into the long ball in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs, with three of the runs coming from a three-run homer from Dauri Genao that gave the Golden Falcons a 6-5 lead, after scoring two runs earlier in the inning. Edwin Tavarez then followed with a solo homer, putting Felician up, 7-5.

In the top of the fourth it was the Eagles turn for back-to-back homers as Soloman and Pavelchak opened the inning with back-to-back solo homers tying the game back at 7-7. It was the first homer of the season for both players. In the bottom of the inning, Felician hit their third homer of the game, a solo shot from Anthony Lamar.

The two teams exchanged runs in the fifth inning as Felician held onto their one run lead at 9-8.

However, in the top of the seventh, the Eagles rallied for two runs all with two outs in the inning. After the first two batters grounded out, Pavelchak and Brennan hit back-to-back singles and DJ Caron was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Matt Goehrig followed, ripping a two-run double to left to score Brennan and Pavelchak to give Post the 10-9 lead.

Brennan Holligan came in the game in the bottom of the fifth to help slow the Felician bats down, pitching 3.1 innings, and striking out three while walking one, giving up no hits. He earned the win and is 5-2 on the season.

In the top of the eighth Gill gave the Eagles one more insurance run, hitting his first homer of the season for the final tally.

Jacob Tamburrino came on for the save in the bottom of the ninth, walking one and striking out two. It was his fourth save of the season.

Pavelchak was 3-for-6 with three runs and two RBI. Brennan was 3-for-3 with two RBI, three runs and three walks. Goehrig was 1-for-3 with a run, two RBI and three walks. Gill was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run and Soloman was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Game two looked destined to look similar to game one, as Brennan hit his second homer of the day in the top of the first to give Post the early lead before Tavarez answered in the bottom of the inning with a three-run homer to give Felician a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the second, the Eagles again started a two-out rally, this time scoring four runs in the inning. After the first two batters struck out Manny Contreras and Pavelchak drew back-to-back walks. After an infield single from Brennan loaded the bases, Caron cleared the bases with a triple to right to take a 4-1 lead. With Gill up, a passed ball allowed Caron to score to make it a 5-3 game.

After the first inning, the Eagles' pitching staff kept the Felician bats silent for the next four innings as Goehrig, who started game two, retired 13 straight batters from the bottom of the first until the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, the Eagles scored two more, the first on an RBI single from Brennan, followed by Caron reaching on an error that scored Brennan.

The Golden Falcons got one back on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh. The first three batters reached base as Evan Cornwell singled followed by Soloman being hit by a pitch and a walk to Chris Corchado and Pavelchak brought Cornwell home on a fielder's choice. After a line out, Caron singled to score Soloman. The hit was Caron's 74th of the season breaking the single season mark set by teammate Robert Olah last season.

Brennan finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Caron was 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run. Pavelchak was 1-for-3 with a run and RBI. Contreras scored twice.
