Waterbury, CT – The Post University baseball team set a new program record after a 4-3 win over Bloomfield in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game on Thursday.
The win gives the Eagles their 31
st win of the season, breaking the previous mark of 30, set in 2018. The Eagles are now 31-14 overall and 20-3 in the CACC. Bloomfield is now 15-28 overall and 10-11 in the CACC.
Post fell behind 2-0 after the first inning as Elian Guzman hit a solo home run and Franny Medina hit an RBI single.
It didn't take long for the Eagles to get back in the game, scoring two runs in the top of the second, beginning its rally with a one out walk from
Matt Goehrig and a single from
Chris Corchado. With runners on the corner,
Hunter Keller reached on a fielder's choice that scored Goehrig, cutting their deficit in half.
Evan Cornwell followed with an RBI single, tying up the game.
Starting pitcher
Joe Christiana got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second, striking out Justin Rivera to keep the game tied.
In the top of the fourth inning, there was a similar feel to the second inning as both Goehrig and Corchado both reached base with one out. This time it was Goehrig who singled and Corchado who walked. Keller once again came up big, hitting a single to right field to score Goehrig and put the Eagles up, 3-2 while Corchado advanced to third. With Cornwell at the plate, Bloomfield starting pitcher Samir Lopez threw a wild pitch, allowing Keller to score and put the Eagles up, 4-3.
Bloomfield got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a homer from Medina, but the Eagles bullpen was able to shut down the Bloomfield bats the rest of the way.
Christiana earned his sixth win of the season, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up just two earned runs on five hits while striking out five.
Nate Byrd pitched 1.1 innings allowing one run on a hit.
Brennan Holligan earned the save in two innings of relief, striking out two.
Keller finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI. Cornwell was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Up next, the Eagles close out CACC play, taking on Felician in a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday.
