Springfield, MA. - A day after clinching the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division title, the Post University baseball team was back to business on Wednesday, defeating American International College (AIC), 8-5 in a non-conference game.
The Eagles, who are now 30-14 on the season, tied a school record for most wins in a season with the 2018 team. AIC is now 18-19 overall.
D.J. Caron had the hot bat for the day, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run. His four hits were a season-high.
Runs were scarce over the first five innings of the game as the Yellow Jackets scored a run in the first and the Eagles tied it up in the third after back-to-back doubles from
Jimmy Brennan and Caron.
After having just five hits over the first fie innings, the Eagles bats came alive with five hits and four runs in the top of the sixth. Caron led off the inning with a triple to right and would score on a
Robert Olah sacrifice fly to put the Eagles up, 2-1.
Hunter Keller and
Matthew Soloman followed with consecutive singles, and for the second straight game,
Michael Gajda came up in a big spot as a pinch hitter and delivered a two-run double to make it a 4-1 game.
Manny Contreras would add an RBI double of his own to make it a 5-1 game.
In the seventh, Brennan was hit b y a pitch to start the inning before Caron doubled to left for his third double of the game.
Matt Goehrig then singled to drive in Brennan and a sacrifice fly from Keller gave the Eagles a 7-1 lead.
AIC rallied in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs, with the first run coming without a hit in the inning as a bases loaded walk made it a 7-2 game. They'd get their first hit in the inning on a two-run single by Josh Frometa. They'd tack on their final run on an RBI single from Tyler Ziemak.
Post added one more insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Keller.
Brennan was 1-for-4 with two runs. Keller was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Goehrig was 1-for-4 with a run, RBI and a walk.
Caron leads the CACC with 69 hits on the season. His three doubles puts him tied for fourth in the CACC with 13, just one behind the leaders. His four triples on the season also ranks him fourth.
Vincent Borghese got the win for the Eagles, allowing just one earned run in six innings on four hits, three walks and striking out two.
Jacob Tamburrino earned the save pitching the ninth inning, striking out one.
The Eagles will take on Bloomfield on the road on Thursday at 4 p.m. in a CACC matchup, a make up of an April 15 rain out.
