Lindemuth’s Heroics Give Baseball Second Straight CACC North Division Title

Waterbury, CT  – In as a dramatic of a finish as you could have, Shane Lindemuth hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to score Danny Gill to lift the Post University baseball team to its second straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) as the Eagles defeated Felician, 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.

With the game tied at 4-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth, Robert Olah hit a one out single to begin the rally and Gill pinch ran for him. A single by Matt Goehrig put runners on first and second, putting Lindemuth at the plate.

Lindemuth – who came in the game as a pinch runner in the bottom of the eighth – took a 2-1 breaking ball from Felician's Nick DiMartino and hit a line drive over the shortstop shallow left field. Gill scampered around third and Felician left fielder, Thomas Kendrick threw the ball home on a line to catcher Ray Pereira and Gill dove head first into home which was being blocked, and the home plate umpire called Gill safe, sending the Eagles into a frenzy, as they celebrated the fourth North Division title in program history. The Eagles also won in 2018, 2019 and 2022.

The Eagles had to rally in the bottom of the eighth to be able to set the stage for the ninth. With the Eagles trailing, 4-2, Matt Goehrig homered to left field to lead off the inning for his tenth homer of the season and 27th of his career to close the gap to 4-3. After a walk to pinch hitter Chris Corchado – who was then replaced by Lindemuth on the base paths – a sacrifice bunt by Evan Cornwell put the runner on second. A pop out to second put Michael Gajda at the plate with two outs. A wild pitch moved Lindemuth to third and Gajda hit a ball up the middle to score Lindemuth and tie the game.

The game wasn't short of drama in the top of the ninth, either. Jacob Tamburrino came into relief with a runner on first and no outs. A bunt moved the runner to second and a single from Kendrick put runners on the corners. Cole Porter's groundout put runners on second and third with two outs, but Tamburrino got Edwin Tavarez to strikeout swinging to send the game to the bottom of the inning.

Felician scored the first run of the game in the top of the third, but the Eagles scored one in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from DJ Caron, and took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Matthew Soloman.

The Eagles got in trouble in the top of the sixth, giving up three runs, including a two-run single by Chris Fernandez to give them a 3-2 lead. They'd tack on one more run on a groundout.

Goehrig finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Lindemuth was 1-for-1 with one run and one RBI. Michael Pavelchak was 2-for-4.

Starter Dan Raglievich threw six innings, giving up sour earned runs on seven hits while striking out four. Nate Byrd pitched two innings of relief, allowing just one walk. Tamburrino earned the win in his one inning of relief.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday as they take on American International College on the road at 3:30 p.m. in non-conference play.
