Philadelphia, Pa. – The Post University baseball team's magic number is down to one to clinch the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division title after splitting with Chestnut Hill, 10-7 before losing game two, 8-6.
In an historic game one,
Matt Goehrig became the home run king at Post University, hitting three home runs for 26 in his career, surpassing Don Walsh, who had 24.
Goehrig's first home run came in the first inning with the Eagles already leading 2-0 after a
Robert Olah two-run single. His two-run homer to left tied the school record, and put the Eagles up, 4-0.
The Griffins closed the game on a three-run homer in the bottom of the second, but the Eagles answered right back in the top of the inning with the longball as Olah and Goehrig hit back-to-back home runs, and Goehrig became the all-time leader with his 25
th homer of his career.
Post made it a 7-3 game after an RBI single from
DJ Caron, but again the Griffins closed the gap after an RBI single by Justin Geiger and a wild pitch made it a 7-5 game.
But again, the Eagles made up for it in the next half inning. After the first two batters struck out,
Jimmy Brennan was hit by a pitch and Caron homered to left to make it a 9-5 game. It was Caron's third of the season.
In the seventh, Goehrig officially put his mark again in the record books, hitting his third homer of the game, tying the school mark for home runs in a game, again with
Walsh, who hit three in a game in 2016 against University of the Sciences.
Goehrig is now second in the CACC with nine home runs.
To cap it off, Goehrig earned the win for the Eagles, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up five earned runs while striking out three.
Goehrig finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. Olah was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Caron was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run. Brennan was 2-for-3 with two runs and Pavelchak was 1-for-3 with two runs.
In game two, the Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning, including three in the top of the first. Brennan hit an RBI triple, while Caron had an RBI groundout and
Hunter Keller with an RBI single. Olah drove home a run in the second with an RBI single.
Post was cruising through the game until the bottom of the fifth when Crane hit a two-run homer for the Griffins to cut Post's lead in half.
The Eagles got one of the runs back in the top of the sixth on another RBI single from Olah.
However, the bottom of the sixth the Griffins (15-25, 9-10 CACC) took the lead, scoring six runs. The first two came on a two-run single by R.J. Huth. They'd take the lead at 6-5 after a two-run double by Crane. Chestnut Hill added two more RBI singles in the inning for insurance.
Post was able to get a run in the top of the seventh on an error from the Griffins and had the lead run at the plate, but the Eagles grounded out to end the game.
Olah was 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Brennan was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. He is currently second in the CACC in runs batted in with 43. Pavelchak was 2-for-5 with two runs.
