Philadelphia, Pa. – The Post University men's lacrosse team won its third straight game, defeating Chestnut Hill, 11-9 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game.
Post is now 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the CACC, who clinched a spot in the conference tournament. A win in their next game against Wilmington will secure a first round bye in the tournament. Chestnut Hill is now 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the CACC.
It was the first win over the Griffins since 2018 for the Eagles.
Post got on the board early, scoring twice in less than three minutes into the game as
Braedan Lockyer and
Leighton Cooke got the Eagles on the board, 2-0.
The Griffins responded with three of their own, including two by Noah Hammon to put them up 3-2 at the 3:34 mark.
Just 70 seconds later, the Eagles would tie it back up to begin a string of four straight goals as
Robbie McGrayne took a pass from
Tim Keefe who was behind the net. McGrayne fired a shot into the top right corner to tie the game as the teams ended the first period, tied 3-3.
Post opened up the second period with three consecutive goals, including the second by Cooke with the Eagles down a man just 36 seconds in. Keefe followed at the 13:29 mark with his first goal of the game bouncing a shot from ten yards out into the net. With the Eagles a man up,
Zack Gignac scored his fourth of the season, putting Post up, 6-3.
After the Griffins sandwiched in a goal, the Eagles scored the final two of the period as McGrayne and Keefe connected again as Keefe juked by his defender found a small opening to hit McGrayne who made it a 7-4 game.
Dylan Heald then had a highlight goal of his own, taking a pass from
Ryan Denike and whipping the shot over his shoulder for his first of two goals.
The Eagles went into the half with an 8-4 lead, but after no goals for the first six minutes of the third period, the Griffins scored three straight times in the course of 2:41 of action. Lockyer stopped the run with his second goal of the game at the 5:20 mark as he intercepted a pass after the Eagles had just turned it over. He took a clear shot past Chestnut Hill goalkeeper, Austin Jones to put the Eagles back up, 9-7.
Post scored two insurance goals early in the fourth, including the second from Heald as
Brendan Kelleher sprinted for a clear and into the offensive zone, finding his open teammate to make it 10-7 at the 14:36 mark. Lockyer would then get the Eagles their last goal of the game at 12:50 off a pass from Denike.
The Griffins didn't go quietly scoring goals at 11:23 and 10:34 from Zach Jastrzebski and Zachary Whalen, respectively. But the Eagles didn't break, not allowing a goal the rest of the way.
Cole George finished with nine saves for Post.
It was Lockyer's sixth game with at least three goals. Heald finished with two goals and an assist. McGrayne and Cooke had two goals and Keefe had a goal and two assists.
Heald leads the CACC with 35 goals and in points with 52, with McGrayne just behind him with 34 goals, and 46 points, which puts him fifth.
