Philadelphia, Pa. - The Post University baseball team continued its torrid pace, defeating Thomas Jefferson University, 8-7 and 8-4 on Sunday afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader.
The Eagles are now 19-12 overall and 9-1 in the CACC, sitting in first place in the North Division. They have won six straight and 12 of their last 13. Jefferson is now 13-13 overall and 3-3 in the CACC.
In the game one win, the Eagles used a six-run fourth inning to vault them to the lead and the eventual win.
Jefferson got on the board with two runs in the first inning, before
Matt Goehrig - who was also the starting pitcher for Post - hit his sixth home run of the season, and 23rd of his career, making it a 2-1 game. He is now in sole possession of second all-time in Post history in home runs, just one off tying the record set by Don Walsh.
The Rams took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Alex Gonzalez.
The top of the fourth didn't get off to a promising start as the first two hitters were retired, but the next six batters would reach base beginning with a single by Goehrig who was driven in by
Robert Olah on an RBI double to make it a 3-2 game.
Hunter Keller followed with an RBI single. After
Evan Cornwell was hit by a pitch,
Matthew Soloman hit an RBI single to give Post the 4-3 lead, and
Michael Pavelchak hit an RBI double to score Cornwell.
Jimmy Brennan put a bow on the inning, with a two-run single to score both Pavelchak and Solomon to give Post the 7-3 lead.
Chris McLean hit a two-run single to cut Post's lead to 7-5 and the Eagles added a much needed insurance run in the top of the sixth as Brennan hit an RBI double to score Cornwell who doubled to lead off the inning.
Jefferson scored one in the sixth and one in the seventh on a solo homer by David Santiago, but did not get another runner on base the rest of the way.
Goehrig pitched 3.2 innings, striking out four and giving up five earned runs on five hits.
Brennan Holligan earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings, striking out six and giving up just two earned runs on two hits and a walk.
Brennan was 2-for-4 with three RBI. At the plate, Goehrig was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Keller was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Cornwell scored twice and Soloman was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
In game two, Post jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first behind an RBI double from Caron and an RBI single from Olah as starting pitcher
Justin Portes was able to shut down the Rams' bats for the first three innings, leaving them scoreless.
Post scored three more in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single from Pavelchak to make it a 5-0 game.
The Rams got two back on a two-run single by Marquise Wood, which the Eagles got right back on a two-run single by
Manny Contreras. Post added one more run in the seventh on an RBI single from Soloman.
Pavelchak was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run.
DJ Caron was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Cornwell was 1-for-2 with three runs while walking twice. Contreras had three RBI, a career-high.
Portes got the win for the Eagles, pitching 4.1 innings, striking out two and giving up just two earned runs.
Derek Duval struck out two in an inning of relief.
Post returns to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Alliance on April 5 beginning at noon at Municipal Stadium.
