Softball Sweeps New Haven, Win In Walkoff Fashion In Game Two

Waterbury, CT. – The Post University softball team swept in-state rival University of New Haven on Monday at LaMoy Field, 6-3 and 6-5 in non-conference play.

In the game two thriller, the Eagles rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the seventh and scored the game-winning run in the eighth.

The start of the Eagles comeback in the bottom of the seventh started with a one out double by Allyson Wallauer, followed by a single by Juliana Rigano. With the Eagles down to their last out Brianna Hynds walked to load the bases. Bailey Dickenson came up in a pinch-hit situation and ripped a single up the middle to tie the game as Rigano and Wallauer scored.

With Samantha Riccardulli at the plate, she laid down a bunt down the third base line, but the throw to the plate got in just before Hynds and the game went into extra innings.

A runner started on base for the Chargers in the top of the eighth and a bunt single moved runners to the corner, starting pitcher Jenny Riquelme got out of the jam on a line out to left field, a strikeout, and a pop out to shortstop.

In the bottom of the inning, Julia Maida started the inning on second base, and stole third on the first pitch to Leyri Rivera. On the next pitch, Rivera hit a deep fly ball to center that was able to score Maida to give the Eagles the win.

In the beginning of the game, the Chargers got on the board first with a sacrifice fly by Halle Frederick to put them up, 1-0.

The Eagles would tie the game in the third on an RBI double by Wallauer, and take a 3-1 lead on a two-run double by Lily Tomasiello.

New Haven took the lead back in the top of the fifth on RBI singles from Bella Chenet and Olivia Roberto, and an RBI double from Hailey LaForte.

Rivera finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Tomasiello was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Wallauer was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI and Bailey Dickenson had two RBI.

Riquelme pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run, and striking out three.

In game one, the Eagles got on the board in the third with two runs after the first four runners reached base. Rivera started the inning with a double, followed by three straight singles from Courtney Brobst, Tomasiello and Wallauer. The latter two drove in a run each.

Brooke Dickenson doubled to left to lead off the bottom of the fourth, and was driven in on a sacrifice fly from Rivera. After a single from Brobst, Tomasiello launched a ball to left field that bounced on the top of the fence and over for her fifth homer of the year.

The Chargers got within 5-3 at after scoring two in the fifth on RBI singles from Roberto and Maeve Lougheed and one more in the top of the sixth, but that's as close as they would get. Tomasiello added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly that scored Carli Perruso.

Tomasiello went 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run. Rivera went 2-fo-3 with an RBI and a run and Brobst went 2-for-3 with two runs.

Tomasiello now has 42 RBI on the season, tying her for the lead in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Wallauer is second in batting average at .440.

Maddison Caldwell pitched six innings striking out two and giving up three earned runs on eight hits. Alyssa Hughes pitched a perfect seventh for her first save of the season.

Up next, the Eagles host Caldwell in the final home doubleheader of the season on Wednesday, beginning at 2:30 p.m. in CACC play.
