Morehead City, N.C. – Robert Olah drove in three runs and Matt Goehrig struck out six as the Post University baseball team defeated Franklin Pierce University, 6-2 in their four-game series finale on Sunday afternoon.
The win moves the Eagles to 7-8 on the season, while Franklin Pierce, seeded third in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region poll to 8-2.
After both teams were retired in order in the first – including two strikeouts from Goehrig – the Post bats came alive as Danny Gill and Olah hit back-to-back doubles, putting the Eagles up, 1-0. Chris Corchado followed with an RBI single to drive in Olah, giving Post a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
Goehrig again struck out two in the bottom of the inning and the Eagles rewarded him with two more in the top of the third. DJ Caron led off the inning with a double to left. After a groundout, Gill followed with his second double of the game, driving in Caron. Olah then came drove in his second run of the game on an RBI single to score Gill.
The Ravens scored one back in the fourth before Olah drove in his third run of the game in the top of the fifth with his second RBI double of the day to drive in Gill, who walked with one out in the inning.
Goehrig finished his outing with 5.1 innings pitched, giving up one run, which was unearned.
The Ravens added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a bases loaded hit by pitch and the Eagles added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single from Michael Pavelchak.
Olah finished the day going 4-for-5 to go with his three RBI and also scored a run. Gill went 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Derek Duval pitched 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit, one walk and striking out three.
Up next, the Eagles head to Florida for its annual Spring Break trip with their first game on March 11 against Saint Thomas Aquinas, beginning at noon.
