Softball Bats Wreak Havoc In Sweep Of Alliance

Staten Island, N.Y. – The Post University softball team had its first doubleheader sweep of the season, defeating Alliance 16-6 (6) and 9-8 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Wednesday.

The Eagles, who have now won three straight games are 5-17 overall and 2-2 in the CACC. Alliance is 3-21 overall and 1-7 in the CACC.

In game one, the Eagles got off to a blazing hot start, scoring nine runs over the course of the first two innings.

With one out in the first, Courtney Brobst and Allyson Wallauer hit back-to-back triples to give the Eagles a 1-0. After a walk to Courtney DeAngelis, the Eagles would score runs with hits by the next four batters to center field. Lily Tomasiello started with an RBI single to score Wallauer followed by a two-run double by Julianna Cicala. Juliana Rigano then hit the third triple of the inning for Post, scoring Cicala. Brooke Dickenson ended the scoring with an RBI single, making it a 6-0 lead after the top of the first.

After Alliance scored one in the bottom of the inning, Brobst hit a solo home run to lead off the second inning. Wallauer and Tomasiello would hit singles and Cicala doubled to drive in Wallauer. Rigano drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Alliance crept back in the game with three runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a two-run single by Janelle Adams. In the bottom of the third, Alliance closed the gap to 9-6 in the bottom of the third on a single and error.

The bats went silent in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Eagles ended the game via the mercy rule in the top of the sixth as the first six batters reached base as DeAngelis hit a two-run double and Tomasiello hit an RBI single. Samantha Riccardulli hit an RBI single, Makayla Roberts had an RBI ground out and Brobst finished the scoring with an RBI single.

The Eagles had a season-high in hits with 18, runs with 16, RBI with 15 and triples with three.

Brobst went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. It was Brobst first four-hit game of her career and second game this season with at least three runs. Wallauer was 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Tomasiello was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. It was her eighth multi-hit game of the season.

Cicala finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. It was Cicala's second career game with at least three hits. Rigano and DeAngelis scored twice and had two RBI.

Maddison Caldwell earned the win, her third of the season, pitching five innings, striking out one.

Adams was 4-for-4 for Alliance.

In game two, the Eagles scored their first run without a hit after three walks and a hit by pitch. Alliance tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but the Eagles once against used a big inning, scoring five runs in the top of the fifth.

Julia Maida started with a single and a hit by pitch by Leyri Rivera and walk to Brobst to load the bases for Wallauer who hit an RBI single. DeAngelis followed with a bases loaded walk and Tomasiello hit a two-run double to make it a 5-1 game. Rigano hit an RBI single for the final run of the inning.

An RBI single from Wallauer made it a 7-1 game, but Alliance scored three in the third and one in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run homer from Kayla Bird in the third.

The Eagles scored two in the top of the fifth, which ended up being important insurance runs as Tomasiello reached on an error that scored Wallauer and Brobst.

Brittany Tomala hit an RBI triple as part of a two-run sixth inning for Alliance.

Alliance threatened to tie the game, but after scoring a run on an RBI double by Bird, Alyssa Hughes retired the last two batters, leaving her stranded on second.

Wallauer was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Tomasiello was 1-for-4 with four RBI. The Eagles walked eight times, the second most this season. Jenny Riquelme earned the win, giving up five earned runs on six hits while striking out one.

Bird was 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run for Alliance.

Up next, the Eagles will host Assumption at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 31.
