Wilmington, De. – The Post University baseball team hit two grand slams in game two, earning a split with Goldey-Beacom in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. Post won game two 14-5 after falling 4-2 in game one.
Post is now 14-12 overall and 4-1 in the CACC and are in first place in the CACC North. The Lightning are 15-9 overall and 2-1 om the CACC.
In game two, the Eagles used a six-run first inning as the first six batters reached base and was capped by a grand slam from
Matt Goehrig, giving Post the 6-0 lead.
DJ Caron and
Danny Gill also had RBI singles. It was the third consecutive game Goehrig has hit a homer. It was his fifth of the season and 22
nd in his career, tying him for second all-time in school history.
The Lightning used the long ball themselves in the bottom of the first, getting solo home runs from Christian Petrillo and Kyle Walker, making it a 6-2 game, and adding one more in the bottom of the second.
Post added two more runs in the fifth highlighted by an RBI single from
Jimmy Brennan. But it was Brennan's at-bat in the seventh that put the game away for the Eagles, very similar to the first inning as the first six batters reached base and Brennan capped the inning with a grand slam, making it a 14-4 game.
Evan Cornwell also had a two-run single in the inning.
Brennan went 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs. Goehrig was 2-for-3 with three runs and four RBI.
Michael Pavelchak was 1-for-2 with two runs and three walks.
Brennan Holligan earned the win in relief, giving up just two earned runs on four hits, while striking out two in 3.1 innings.
Vincent Borghese started the game, striking out three in 3.2 innings.
Game one was a pitchers' duel until Goehrig, who was also the starting pitcher, homered helped himself with a solo home run to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Post added one more run in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.
However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles' defense committed two errors, as four runs scored for the Lightning. Walker had an RBI single in the inning to tie the game for Goldey-Beacom and scored on a wild pitch to put Goldey-Beacom on 3-2.
Pavelchak was 2-for-4 during the game.
On the mound, Goehrig pitched five innings, allowing four runs, one earned, while striking out six and walking five.
Jake Kelchner pitched six innings for Goldey-Beacom, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out three.
