Lantana, FL. - The Post University baseball team scored six runs in the first inning and
Justin Portes and
Vincent Borghese were solid on the mound as the Eagles defeated in-state rival Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), 9-4 in a non-conference game during their Florida Spring Break Trip.
The Eagles move to 8-11 on the season, while the Owls, ranked No. 5 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association East Region Poll, fall to 10-4.
Post wasted little time getting their offense going in the top of the first.
Hunter Keller began the hot start at the plate with a single. After a walk to
Jimmy Brennan,
Danny Gill singled to drive in Keller to get the Eagles on the board.
Robert Olah followed with a walk and
Matt Goehrig ripped a double to the left field fence, driving in two. The offense chased Owls starter Steve Phillips from the game after only recording one out.
Reliever Brett Fee came in for Phillips, and the Eagles greeted him with three more runs on three consecutive batters.
Evan Cornwell started with a sacrifice fly followed by RBI singles from
Shane Lindemuth and
DJ Caron, making it a 6-0 game.
Post added a run in the second on another RBI double from Goehrig.
Meanwhile on the mound,
Justin Portes pitched four stellar innings of no-hit ball, walking one and striking out three.
The Owls got one back in both the fifth and sixth innings, making it a 7-2 game, but the Eagles shut the door in the seventh on a two-run triple by Caron.
Vincent Borghese pitched 3.2 innings of effective relief, striking out three and giving up just two earned runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Caron was 2-for-6 with three RBI. Gill went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Goehrig was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run. Lindemuth reached base five times, going 3-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run.
Goehrig is 6-for-13 with five runs, seven RBI, three doubles and a home run and slugging .923 during the Spring Break trip thus far. Caron is 9-for-20 with a run and four RBI and two doubles during the same stretch.
Fee pitched 6.1 innings in relief for SCSU, striking out seven and giving up three earned runs on seven hits.
Post returns to action on Thursday, taking on Adelphi at 1 p.m. in Lantana, FL.
