Waterbury, CT - The Post University men's basketball used an impressive second half and
Abdul-Basit Ajia had a double-double as the Eagles defeated Jefferso, 76-61 on Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play.
The win was the fifth in the last six games for the Eagles, who are now 13-9 overall and 8-5 in the CACC. Jefferson is now 12-10 overall and 8-4 in the CACC.
Post won its first game against Jefferson since the 2017-2018 season.
Ajia finished with ten points and tied a with career-high 19 rebounds, including 11 in the second half.
David Jasson led the Eagles with 16 points, while
Isaiah Holmes scored 15 and
D.J. Frechette, 12.
Post jumped out the gate, scoring the first eight points all by four different players to take the early lead.
Jefferson fought back after back-to-back threes from Jason Shields to take their first lead at 15-12 at the 11:46 mark. Post took the lead back on a three-pointer from Frechette, and after briefly losing the lead, Jasson and Homes both hit threes to go up 24-21 with 7:25 remaining.
The Rams took the lead on a jumper from Hakim Byrd with 5:45 left and held onto the lead going into the half, but not before an offensive rebound and layup from Ajia in the closing seconds cut Post's deficit to 33-32 at the break.
Holmes hit a three to kick off the second half and a jumper from Frechette gave the Eagles its first lead of the half at 37-35. The Eagles took a 44-37 on a three from Jasson followed by a layup from
Harrison Warnock at the 16:24 mark.Â
A three from Ahmed Barba-Bey cut Post's lead to 49-46 until the game turned around on an offensive rebound from Frechette that he went back up with for a strong layup while getting fouled on the play. He made the free throw as the play sparked a 12-0 run, capped by a jumper from Jasson to give Post its biggest lead of the game.
Post wouldn't lead by less than nine points the rest of the way, as its defense held the Rams to just 27.3 shooting (9-for-33) in the second half, while shooting 53.8 percent (14-for-26) after halftime.
For Ajia, it was his third double-double of the season. His 19 rebounds tied his career-high he set last season in a win against Felician. Jasson went 6-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-3 from three. Frechette and Holmes also had five rebounds. Holmes also added four assists.
Warnock and
Quest Harris both finished with eight points for the Eagles.
Post is now in third place in the CACC North Division, a game behind Dominican.
Antonin Kemkeng led the Rams with 14 points and nine rebounds. Erik Timko, the CACC's leading scorer was held to just 13 points.
