Waterbury, CT - The Post University baseball team split their season opening doubleheader with Saint Anselm, dropping game one, 16-10 before rebounding and winning game two, 7-4.
In the game two win, the Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run single from
Damaurys Rodriguez to drive in
Michael Pavelchak and
DJ Caron.Â
The Hawks responded with three in the top of the second before Post tied it back up in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single from Pavelchak.
After the Hawks took another lead in the top of the fourth on an error, the Eagles, led by Caron and Pavelchak took the lead back, as Caron's fielder's choice tied the game before Pavelchak's single gave the Eagles the one-run advantage.
Pavelchak added some breathing room for the Eagles in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run single to score Caron and
Hunter Keller.
The Eagles pitching staff was electric as
Dan Raglievich struck out ten in just four innings. All four runs were unearned.
Matt Goehrig followed suit, striking out six in three innings, earning his first save of the season.
Pavelchak finished the game 4-for-4 with a career-high four RBI and a run. Caron was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Rodriguez was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Keller scored three runs, going 2-for-2 and drawing a walk.
In an offensive explosion in game one, Post took a 4-1 lead after the first after the first four batters reached base.
DJ Caron led off the inning with a double, followed by
Danny Gill reaching on an error.
Jimmy Brennan drove in Caron with a single before a
Robert Olah double gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Rodriguez added a sacrifice fly before
Evan Cornwell drove in Olah with an RBI single.
The Hawks, however, erupted for five runs in the second and three in the third, highlighted by two RBI singles from Mike Borrelli and a home run from Mike Pierro.
Post got one run back on an RBI groundout from Olah to make it a 9-5 game after the third, but one run each from the Hawks in the fourth and fifth, including an RBI double from Brady Doran put the Hawks back up, 11-5.
The Eagles cut their deficit to 11-7 after an RBI single from Caron and a sacrifice fly from Gill, but the Hawks shut the door with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to go up, 15-7.Â
Post tacked on three runs in the eighth, two of them on bases loaded walks by Rodriguez and
Chris Corchado with one out, but left the bases loaded to end the inning.
Brennan finished the game going 2-for-6 with three runs and two RBI. Olah was 2-for-5 with one run and two RBI. Cornwell was 3-for-5 with a run. Caron went 3-for-5 with a run and RBI in his Post debut. Pavelchak was 3-for-5 with two runs.
The two teams meet again in a doubleheader beginning at noon at Municipal Stadium on Sunday.
