Women's Ice Hockey Swept in NEWHA Weekend Series Against Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. – After scoring a goal at the tail end of the game less than 24 hours ago against Saint Anselm College on the road, Post University Women's Ice Hockey looked to ride that momentum into Saturday afternoon against the Hawks, but tight defensive play and some tough bounces would go in favor of the opposition as the Eagles were shutout, 3-0, getting swept by Saint Anselm in the weekend series.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, Saint Anselm College 3

Post University (3-8-0, 3-4-0 NEWHA)

Saint Anselm College (6-5-1, 6-1-1 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a turnover near the blue line by the Eagles, Saint Anselm would control the puck and look to dump it in deep into the offensive side of the ice. An awkward bounce off the end board would carom the puck to the right side of sophomore goalie Hannah Saunders in net where senior forward Celesta Paolucci picked it up and squirted it by Saunders inside the right post to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead with just under 11 minutes left in the first.

That would be the only blemish of the opening frame for Saunders who corralled nine shots taken by the Hawks while junior goalie Annabella Lalande, who got the start for the Hawks, stopped four shots from the Eagles to keep her team ahead 1-0 after one.

Senior forward Natalie Tulchinsky would add to the Saint Anselm lead in the second period while the Hawks were on the power play courtesy of some fancy stickwork in the offensive end. Junior forward Audrey Jackson would curl down the right side of the zone towards the middle around her defender before hitting Tulchinsky on the opposite end of the goal mouth for the top left shot on Saunders that would freeze her.

Saunders would face 20 shots in the second period and 14 in the third while giving up just one more goal to Jackson when she tipped in a puck from senior forward Clair Weber for the third Hawk goal of the game. Meanwhile Lalande faced just three second period shots and four more in the third as Saint Anselm took the 3-0 shutout win at home.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Hannah Saunders had a strong afternoon in net, stopping 41 total shots on 44 attempts by Saint Anselm
  • The Post offense would generate just 11 shots against Annabella Lalande who made all 11 saves in the shutout win
  • This is the fifth time in 11 games in which Post University has been shutout
  • In the all-time series, Post University is now 0-22-0 against Saint Anselm

WHO'S NEXT
Post University goes on the road for a midweek matchup against Quinnipiac University at 6:00 pm on Wednesday night down in Hamden, Connecticut.
