MANCHESTER, N.H. – It was another come-from-behind game for Post University Men's Ice Hockey on Friday night against Saint Anselm College on the road, but the outcome was different than a week ago. A third period goal by freshman defenseman
Cameron Craig in his first collegiate game would help send the game to overtime where the Eagles would force a tie in their first Northeast-10 Conference game of the season against the Hawks, 2-2.
THE BASICS
Post University 2, Saint Anselm College 2
Post University (0-2-1, 0-0-1 NE10)
Saint Anselm College (0-3-1, 0-0-1 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second straight game, the Eagles would be the first to jump on the scoreboard about halfway through the first period. Nifty passing between junior defenseman
Trey Deloury and senior forward
Connor Barter after sophomore forward
Matteo Peca stole away the puck on the defensive end led to Barter with just one defender to beat. Moving around his man towards freshman goalie Cam Carroll, Barter would go left to right and beat Carroll for the lone goal of the opening frame.
Being outshot overall 21-13 in the second period and 10-6 in shots on goal, Post would find themselves on the defensive for the better part of the second period while Saint Anselm struck for two goals to take the lead, 2-1. The equalizer would come after an Eagle shot found junior defenseman Will van der Veen's stick before the Post defense could get back leading to a breakaway goal for junior forward Hunter Brackett who beat junior goalie
Zach Richards on the bottom left side.
Giving the Hawks their first lead of the game with just under four minutes remaining in the second, senior forward Tommy Schwartz beat Richards on a wraparound shot inside the right post after being fed passes from sophomore forward Luke Linart and senior forward Will Christensen who worked it around the goal to Schwartz for the go-ahead tally.
However, like last weekend the Eagles would fight their way back into the game and tie things up in the third period after a Hawk turnover in the defensive zone immediately following a shift change by Post. After settling the puck down, Barter would feed Craig at the top left point who rifled it past Carroll for his first collegiate goal and the game-tying goal with 11:54 left in regulation. While Post killed off three power plays in the frame by the Hawks, they would be unable to capitalize on two of their own as the game would head to a five-minute sudden death overtime.
In the three-on-three session, both teams would have a chance with the Eagles firing right on the doorstep of Carroll with a shot that a Hawk defender would flick away near the goal line while Richards would hold Saint Anselm in check on the other end. With 45 seconds remaining in the overtime period, a Post penalty put them in a four-on-three situation in which the defense would successfully hold off the Hawks to earn a point in their conference opener with a 2-2 tie.
