Women's Volleyball Swept by Golden Falcons, Guaranteed to Play CACC Quarterfinals Match on Road

RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- After clinching the final spot in the North Division for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament in less than two weeks the other night, Post University Women's Volleyball hit the road to take on Felician University in a match they needed to have in order to keep their hopes alive of hosting a CACC Quarterfinals match at home. But unlike the first installment last month which saw the Golden Falcons come from behind to shock the Eagles, tonight was a different story in Rutherford, New Jersey with Felician sweeping through Post in straight sets, 3-0.

The loss all but ensure the Eagles will head into the conference tournament as the fourth and final seed from the North Division and likely face the top seed from the South Division in Jefferson University for the second straight year. Last year, the Eagles led 2-1 before dropping the final two sets to the Rams and this year were swept by them down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania just a couple of weeks ago.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, Felician University 3

Post University (6-22, 6-8 CACC)

Felician University (11-13, 9-5 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
From the jump in set one, the Golden Falcons would take the lead and never look back, registering a 10-point victory, 25-15, after taking a 2-0 lead and then later going on a 3-0 run to open up a four-point advantage. With a .265 hitting percentage compared to a .094 hitting percentage and seven errors for the Eagles, Felician's lead would never be cut down to less than two points and a stretch in which six of seven points would go the Golden Falcons' way made the difference in their dominant set win.

Like they had done in two sets against Bridgeport the other night, set two would open up in the control of the Eagles who hopped out to a 5-2 lead after making the most of two Felician errors and two kills from junior outside hitter Caley Harper. Ballooning their lead to as many as six points, 13-7, it seemed like Post was on their way to tying up the match before, much like the Purple Knights did on Tuesday, the Golden Falcons responded with a 8-1 stretch to take their first lead since 1-0. But the late stages of the set would prove to make all the difference as a 21-19 edge for Post evaporated behind a 6-2 finish by Felician to put the Eagles on the brink, winning 25-23.

In what could be looked back on as a match of runs for the Golden Falcons, they would have one more big one in them to seal the sweep. After committing an error that brought Post within one, 4-3, another lethal 8-1 run for Felician would give them enough breathing room to hold off a late Eagle run that saw them get to within four, 23-19, before graduate middle hitter Jelena Vucic's kill and a service error by junior outside hitter Kaila Sandy around a kill from senior setter Izabella Rae gave them a 25-20 set three win and the match.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Sophomore libero Alyssa Groves finished with 16 digs, bringing her to 956 digs on the season and 44 away from reaching 1,000 in only her second season
  • With a team-leading 12 kills, Caley Harper now has 18 matches this season with double-digit kill marks
  • As a team, Post University finished with just a .133 hitting percentage with two of their three sets registering in at a .094 hitting percentage
  • This is only the third time in program history in which Post University has been swept by Felician in the season series, the last coming in 2019 and the first being in 2013
WHO'S NEXT
Post University comes back to the Drubner Center for their penultimate home match of the season against Chestnut Hill College at 1:00 PM. The Eagles have lost four of their last five matchups against the Griffins dating back to 2017, but in their last matchup at home, they took down Chestnut Hill in straight sets, 3-0. Last year on the road, the Griffins returned the favor on their home court with a 3-0 sweep of their own.
