Men's Ice Hockey Comeback Bid Falls Short in Overtime Loss to Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – Coming from behind has been the MO for Post University Men's Ice Hockey so far in the early part of the season and with each game, they have come closer and closer to fully completing it. On Friday, they would have another third-period rally in them yet again, but a power-play goal from Assumption University in overtime would sink the Eagles, 4-3, as they still search for their first win of the season.

THE BASICS

Post University 3, Assumption University 4 (OT)

Post University (0-4-1, 0-2-1 NE10)

Assumption University (6-1-0, 4-1-0 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore forward Ryan Decker and freshman forward Jonathan Surrette helped get the Greyhounds their first goal of the opening frame as graduate forward Shane Sullivan's shot from the right side slipped past junior goalie Drew Blodgett less than four minutes into the contest. A power-play opportunity would yield a second goal for Assumption as junior forward Ronny Paragallo's shot from the point after senior defenseman Camron Roberts found him there to give his team a 2-0 advantage after 20 minutes.

But as they have done multiple times this season, the Eagles would begin their comeback in the second during a 5-on-3 power play with less than a minute remaining. An initial shot from senior forward Michael Gethings from freshman forward Parker Norling would be deflected away by senior guard Thomas McLarnon and find the stick of junior forward Patrick Murphy who fired on the loose puck in front, cutting the Post deficit in half heading into the third, 2-1.

Entering the third, junior defenseman Tommy Buis wasted no time giving the Eagles the equalizer just 59 seconds into the period. Weaving through two defenders for the breakaway after senior forward Brandon Crowther and sophomore Conner Murray teamed up to find him, Buis beat McLarnon to his left to tie things up.

However, the tie score would be short-lived as Surrette put the Greyhounds ahead once more less than five minutes later, 3-2, from Decker and Sullivan, beating Blodgett in a scrum near the crease. But for the second time in the game, the Eagles would answer back to tie with sophomore forward Jake Aloi rifled a shot from the left circle after being fed by graduate forward Jack Engdahl and sophomore defenseman Ryan Cardow with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

The game-tying goal would end up forcing the five-minute sudden death overtime which is where Surrette would give the Greyhounds the game for good. After killing off a Post power play, an Assumption power play would last just 15 seconds as freshman defenseman Patrick McKiernan and junior defenseman John Woernie wheeled around to find Surrette for his second goal and the 4-3 victory for the Greyhounds.
