RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- With their eyes set on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament starting up next Tuesday, Post University Men's Soccer closed out their 2023 regular season against Felician University in a road matchup on Wednesday afternoon, working to a 1-1 tie after a late second-half goal by the Golden Falcons.
THE BASICS
#9 Post University 1, Felician University 1
#9 Post University (10-1-5, 9-0-2 CACC)
Felician University (10-5-2, 7-3-1 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After starting the conference season off at 7-0-0, keeping pace with Post University, it looked as though this matchup could be what decided the top seed for the tournament next week. However, a three-game skid for the Golden Falcons while the Eagles continued to win helped them ultimately take their third straight regular season title heading into the day.
Outplaying Felician with ease in the first half, Post University would rattle off eight total shots off with three reaching junior goalkeeper Emanuele Moretti while the Golden Falcons fired just three total shots, two of which made it on net against junior goalkeeper
Soren Jensen.
But it would be the Eagles with the advantage heading into the halftime locker room as senior midfielder
Pablo Tenorio netted his first goal of the season from sophomore midfielder
Markus Boe Tunge in the 22
nd minute to put Post ahead 1-0. The goal was the first manufactured by the Eagles in just over 225 minutes when they scored against Caldwell University two weeks ago.
Scoring the equalizer in the match, junior midfielder Riccardo Benini took a free kick from about 10 yards outside of the box in the 78
th minute. The shot would freeze Jensen in net as Benini found the back of the net in the top left corner to tie the score at one with just over 12 minutes remaining.
Opportunities for a game-winning goal would be far and few as time winded down with each team getting one solid shot to win the match. The first would come from the Golden Falcons as junior defender Manuel Otero had open space for a shot against Jensen but he would lift the ball wide left of the goal mouth. In the final minute, the Eagle pressure would come quickly on the offensive end and Tenorio would have a chance to win it but similar to Otero his shot would bounce wide of the goal with 16 seconds left as Post ended their regular season with a 1-1 tie.
