Last-Second Stunner Sends Men's Soccer to Tie Against Southern Connecticut

WATERBURY, Conn. -- A relatively quiet non-conference game quickly ratcheted up in intensity for Post University Men's Soccer at LaMoy Field on Saturday afternoon as sophomore forward Manuel Rilova's 53rd minute goal seemingly would hold up as the game-winner before a goal in the final minute by sophomore forward Zico Groenveld would force the Eagles into a 1-1 tie, snapping their five-game winning streak and shutout streak.

THE BASICS

#12 Post University 1, Southern Connecticut State University 1

#12 Post University (6-1-3)

Southern Connecticut State University (2-6-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Defense was the name of the game for both teams on Saturday with the Eagles holding a 7-1 edge in total shots through the first 45 minutes while both teams made a save each in net with junior goalkeepers Soren Jensen and Devin Juan starting for their respective teams.

While Post would control the pace of the game and time of possession throughout a majority of the first half, it would be primarily dictated by neutral zone play and their offensive rushes would often times be shut down quickly by Southern Connecticut.

It was a similar story in the second half which was much chippier than the first half as the two sides combined for 24 total fouls called with the Owls holding a 16-8 margin in that category. However, the Eagles would strike first after an initial shot by sophomore midfielder Markus Boe Tunge was blocked by the Southern Connecticut defense and found the foot of Rilova. Rilova's shot would be a ground ball to Juan's left that froze the goalkeeper and gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead with just over 30 minutes remaining.

Despite continuing to control the match throughout the final 30 minutes, the desperation of Southern Connecticut would finally break through to lead to the equalizing goal as a quick rush down the left side by junior forward Jalen Jean led to a cross pass into the box which was headed just under the crossbar by Groenveld who beat Jensen with 31 seconds left in the match.

Neither side would be able to mount an offensive attack during the final 30 seconds in which two yellow cards were issued to Post on the bench and to graduate midfielder Andrea Berti as the Eagles finished the match with a 1-1 tie.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Post University is now 5-0-1 in their last six matches with their last loss coming against the top team in the nation, Franklin Pierce University
  • There were a total of 36 fouls called in the match with the Owls committing 23 of those to 13 for the Eagles
  • Soren Jensen is now tied with David Mollenthiel for the most consecutive shutout wins in program history at four after today's match
  • Post University's shutout win streak comes to a close at a program record five games which broke their all-time record of four which they set last year (9/7/22 - 9/20/22)
