Women's Ice Hockey Overcomes Two Goal Deficit, Falls in Overtime to Assumption

Julia Wysocki completes second hat trick in program history with 0.7 second left in regulation to force overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. -- It may not have been the outcome they ultimately wanted, but Post University Women's Ice Hockey showed they are continuing to build something special on the young season against Assumption University in Saturday night's road matchup. Trailing 4-2 in the second, junior forward Julia Wysocki went to work for the Eagles, after scoring a goal earlier in the evening, tacking on two more in the final three minutes, including the game-tying power-play goal with 0.7 seconds left to force overtime.

Just over halfway through the overtime frame, the Greyhounds would get the game-winning goal from sophomore forward Emma Gurnell, avoiding a monumental collapse against the Eagles, defeating them 5-4.

THE BASICS

Post University 4, Assumption University 5 (OT)

Post University (1-6-0, 1-2-0 NEWHA)

Assumption University (1-4-1, 1-1-1 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Scoring their first of two power-play goals on the evening, it was Wysocki getting the Eagles on the scoreboard first just 6:45 into the contest as sophomore forward Tristan Currie and sophomore forward Tymmarie Grom hooked her up with the first goal of her record-breaking night. But just under seven minutes later, freshman defender Teagan Vaughan had the answer for Assumption on the power play from freshman defenseman Lexi Kirkeby and freshman forward Jenna Chaplain to tie things up at one after a period.

Vaughan's goal would be the first of three unanswered goals for the Greyhounds against senior goalie Grace Glasrud as they would tack on their second goal just 27 seconds into the middle frame with Chaplain being the recipient from freshman forwards Rachel Agerter and Alexa Hanrahan. Junior forward Sheriden Terrazzano would extend the Greyhound lead to 3-1 when Vaughan found her for the goal with just over four minutes left in the second period but it would be responded to by the Eagles less than 10 seconds later.

Tallying her first goal of the season, sophomore forward Rylee Patfield broke the scoring run for Assumption, cutting into the deficit and making it a 3-2 game with 4:02 left in the second on a pass from Wysocki. The one-goal deficit would be short-lived for Post as freshman defensemen Katelyn Prive and Kaitlyn Cielo teamed up to feed freshman forward Ava McGaffigan for the fourth goal of the evening for the Greyhounds who took a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.

For most of the third, the Eagles were quiet until Wysocki lit the lamp twice more over the final three minutes of regulation. Her first would come with three minutes to go from Patfield to bring Post within a goal, 4-3. After it looked like the Greyhounds had the game in hand, a last-second shot from the right point by the Eagles bounced off junior goalie Carissa Mudrak's pads and found the stick of Wysocki on the left side. The junior fired a backhand shot towards the open net which crossed the line with 0.7 seconds left in regulation, tying the game up, and forcing overtime.

While Post would control the puck for a majority of the extra session, a rush down the left side of the ice during the 3-on-3 by sophomore forward Emma Gurnell would turn into the game-winning goal. Racing in on Glasrud, Gurnell rifled a shot by the senior goalie's left side just inside the post to give Assumption a 5-4 victory on Saturday night in overtime.
