Currie in a Scoring Flurry Helps Lead Women's Ice Hockey Past Saint Michael's

SHELTON, Conn. – It had been nearly a month since Post University Women's Ice Hockey played a home game at the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton, Connecticut until Friday afternoon when they faced off against Saint Michael's College. Coming off an energizing game last weekend against Assumption on the road in which the Eagles overcame a two-goal deficit before falling in overtime, they would carry that momentum over against the Purple Knights to win their second conference game of the season, 3-1, courtesy of three different goal scorers.

THE BASICS

Post University 3, Saint Michael's College 1

Post University (2-6-0, 2-2-0 NEWHA)

Saint Michael's College (0-5-0, 0-5-0 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
A first period mired by neutral zone play and offensive chances for both sides saw the Purple Knights exit the first period with a 14-8 edge in shots on goal but both goalies come up big for their respective teams to keep the score knotted at zero after 20 minutes. Senior goalie Grace Glasrud got the start for the Eagles, her fifth of the season, stopping those 14 opening period shots from Saint Michael's while in just her second collegiate start, freshman Abbey Gyurko came up with eight saves.

Sophomore forward Maddy Noonan would break the scoreless tie just over two minutes into the second period when a turnover turned into two-on-one breakout on the offensive end led to back-and-forth passes between the sophomore and freshman forward Celena Mickevicius after junior defenseman Angeline Pitter shot the puck up the right side. Noonan would finish the job through the legs of Gyurko to put Post ahead, 1-0.

The Purple Knights would respond with the equalizer later on in the period, capitalizing off a defensive zone turnover by sophomore forward Rylee Patfield which would be picked up by senior forward Mary Leys who hit sophomore forward Elizabeth Gerebi with a wide-open left side of the net to beat Glasrud with 4:20 remaining in the second. But the response would be swift from Post on the next draw as a puck served in deep skipped to freshman forward Noa Farberman's stick before she would hit sophomore forward Tristan Currie with a pass in front of the net to put the Eagles back in front just 11 seconds later.

Junior defenseman Caisey Van Den Oetelaar would have a shot to give Post a two-goal lead with her team on the penalty kill, rifling a shot from the point which went past Gyurko, but off the right post, keeping the Eagles in front just by one, 2-1, as the halfway point of the period approached. But Post would get that cushion a little while later after a tripping penalty by freshman forward Alizee LeBlanc.

After winning the face-off, a beautiful pass from Noonan to Mickevicius led to freshman forward Macy Peterson being open on the right side of the net for the snipe just seven seconds into the power play to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead which they would hold onto for their second conference victory of the season.
