Fairfield, CT -
Jenna Abeyta had a goal and an assist, but the Post University women's hockey team lost a 3-2 New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) game to Sacred Heart University on Saturday afternoon.
Post is now 3-22-1 on the season and 3-14-1 in NEWHA. Sacred Heart moves to 13-13-1 overall and 10-7-1 in the conference.
Abeyta put the Eagles up 1-0 just 3:37 into the game. A shot from
Sheridan Terrazzano rebounded to
Madeleine Noonan, whose shot came back out to Abeyta who slid in between the faceoff circles and ripped a shot past SHU goaltender, Molly Elmore.
Post held that lead into the second period behind the work of
Hannah Saunders in net, who stopped 20 of her 51 shots in the first period.
The Pioneers, however, got on the board under a minute into the second period on a goal from Kelly Solak, tying the game.Â
With the game tied in the third, SHU's Ilya Ryskamp scored 3:19 into the period to take their first lead of the game. Less than two minutes later, Sydney Antonakis scored to make it a two-goal lead for the Pioneers.
Post looked to get a rally going, as
Rylee Patfield scored her second goal of the year as Abeyta grabbed the puck in the defensive zone, then passed it off to
Hannah Luckman who found Patfield on a 2-on-1 who took a shot from the right faceoff circle to make it a 3-2 game.
The Eagles were unable to get one more as they played 6-on-5 for the final 33 seconds of the game.
It was the second most saves Saunders has had in a game this season. She had 54 against Syracuse.
Up next, the Eagles host Stonehill on Friday, January 27 at 8 p.m.
