Weber Scores Game Winner, Gets Hat Trick In Men's Hockey's Thrilling Overtime Win Over SNHU

Shelton, CT - Freshman Nick Weber scored a hat trick, including the game-winner in overtime and added two assists as the Post University men's hockey team won a thrilling 6-5 game over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference action.

In the 3-on-3 extra session, the Eagles won the faceoff and a backhanded shot from Nick Brewer went off the Post right to Weber who found an open net to give the Eagles the win as his teammates stormed the ice.

Weber's hat trick was the seventh in program history and Weber's five points were the most by a player in Post men's ice hockey history.

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. Michael Gethings got the scoring going at the 8:37 mark on the power play as Patrick Murphy centered a pass as he was skating towards the net and Gethings put it in the back of the net with a defender draped on him. It was his first goal of the season.

At the 14:22 mark, Weber would score his first of the game, also on a power play, getting a pass from Gethings and going around the net for a wraparound goal, his eighth on the season. Murphy also got credited for his second assist on the day.

Weber's second goal in the period came at the 18:28 mark on a breakaway, warding off a defender and deking SNHU goaltender Adam Mercer, giving Post the 3-0 lead going into the first intermission.

After SNHU got one back on Ryan Coady's first of two goals at the 12:53 mark of the second, Brewer would score his second of the season. During the power play goal Brewer, Lucas Baksay and Weber passed the puck around looking for an opening. Baksay then found Brewer just out side of the faceoff circle who ripped the one-timer past SNHU goaltender Cam Bernard who entered the game to begin the second period.

The Penmen answered immediately with Coady's second goal of the game 32 seconds later before Joe Cantelmo scored on a power play at the 18:11 mark of the second, cutting Post's lead to 4-3 heading into the third.

Matt Monreal tied the game up for SNHU less than three minutes into the third on a power play, but at the 12:40 mark, Baksay would score his first goal in his first game off a pass from Brewer and took a slapshot from the faceoff circle to put Post up, 5-4.

Jackson Aldrich of SNHU scored at 14:58 to tie the game, eventually sending it into overtime.

The Eagles went 4-for-4 on power plays, while the Penmen went 2-for-4. It was the second most power play goals the Eagles have scored in a game in program history. They had five in a win over Johnson and Wales in 2019.

Benjamin Cunneen earned his second win in net, stopping 34 shots. The Eagles had 33 shots on the evening with Weber leading the way with five.

Gethings finished with a goal and an assist. Brewer had a goal and two assists. Baksay had a goal and an assist. Murphy finished with two assists and Tommy Buis and Justin Harshaw each had an assist on the day.

The Eagles won the faceoff battle, 38-37 as Niko Grollman won 11 of his 19 draws.

The two teams meet again on Saturday for a 3 p.m. puck drop in Shelton.
