Second Half Rally For Men's Basketball Falls Short In Loss To Caldwell

Waterbury, CT - The Post University men's basketball team lost an 81-77 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game to Caldwell on Tuesday evening at the Drubner Center.

Post is now 8-8 overall and 3-4 in the CACC. Caldwell moves to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the CACC.

The Eagles led for the better portion of the first half, taking a six point lead on two different occasions. Post took an 11-5 lead early on, going on a 7-0 run as David Jasson and Collins Onyeike contributed five of the points early on.

Post led 21-16 before the Cougars went on a 13-0 run, thanks to five points from Mark Heber that put them up 29-21 with 4:10 remaining. A three from Tyler Small cut the deficit down to five points before the Cougars went up by eight after a three from Darnell Evans gave them their biggest lead of the half at 36-28 with 1:43 remaining.

Isaiah Holmes followed with back-to-back layups, the second coming off a steal from D.J. Frechette to make it a 36-32 game. Heber would hit a jumper at the buzzer to give Caldwell a 38-32 lead at the break.

Caldwell jumped out to a 54-40 lead less than eight minutes into the second half as Darnell Evans scored seven points during the opening stretch.

However, the Eagles would rally as Cape Holden came off the bench with a hot hand, hitting four threes, and cutting the Eagles deficit to 60-57 at the 8:04 mark.

The Cougars increased its lead again to 79-71 after a free throw from Melvin Evans at the 1:15 mark.  Post didn't go away quietly, hitting back-to-back threes. The first came from Tyler Small with 54 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Frechette stole the ball and hit a three of his own to make it a 79-77 game. But the Eagles were unable to get anymore points over the final 41 seconds as Heber hit two free throws down the stretch to seal the win for Caldwell.

Holmes finished with a team-high 16 points. Harrison Warnock had 13 points, while Small finished with ten points. Holden scored 12 points, a career-high on 4-for-5 shooting from three. Jasson finished with nine points and Onyeike had eight points and seven rebounds, tying Kyle Alcy for the team-high. The Eagles won the rebounding edge, 49-41.

The Eagles went 10-for-23 from three.

Heber led Caldwell with 25 points. Darnell Evans had 20.

Up next, the Eagles head to Holy Family to take on the Tigers at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 14.
