Queens, N.Y. - The Post University women's volleyball team lost a 3-2 (18-25, 25-17, 17-25, 25-19, 18-20) thriller to Queens on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match.
Zara McCauley led the way with a team-high 13 kills, while
Amaya Nsubuga and
Colleen Romero each had nine. Romero also had three blocks.
After falling behind 9-2 early in the first set which Queens was never threatened, the Eagles rebounded in the second set after falling behind 4-0 early on.
With the Knights leading 16-15, the Eagles (0-3) scored eight straight points, including three kills by McCauley to take a commanding 23-16. McCauley would end the set on another kill to tie the match at 1-1.
Queens took a 9-3 lead in the third set before the Eagles got to within three at 17-14 after a kill from Nsubuga on an assist from
Maria Branco. However, the Knights scored the next five to take a 22-14 lead.
Post once again fought back to tie the match up in the fourth, with a 7-0 run that staked the Eagles to a 10-4 lead. The Knights got within two at 17-15, but the Eagles scored five of the next six points, as Queens had three attack errors in the run to put the Eagles up 22-16 en-route to the fourth set win.
In the fifth and final set, the Eagles took an 11-8 lead after three straight kills; two by McCauley and one from Romero. The Knights battled back scoring five of the next six points to go up, 13-12.
The Eagles would take the lead three more times, the last coming at 18-17 before the Knights staved off match point and scored the final three points for the win.
Brando finished with 33 assists and 20 digs.
Alyssa Groves had four assists and 20 digs. McCauley also had 18 digs.
Lydimar Santos led Post with two aces.
Alexis Deodat and Christina Franco led Queens (2-2) with 12 kills apiece. Despina Boudrois had 30 assists.
Up next, the Eagles head to Albany to take on The College of Saint Rose at 6 p.m. on August 30.
