Volleyball Drops A Pair In Season Opener

Hempstead, N.Y. - The Post University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to the University of Charleston and Adelphi University, both by a score of 3-0 on Friday afternoon in its season opening matches.

In the loss to Charleston (15-25, 21-25, 12-25) sophomore Colleen Romero led the way with nine kills while junior Zara McCauley chipped in with five as the Eagles had 22 for the match. 

Lydimar Soto had 16 digs, while junior Maria Branco had 14.

The Eagles held an early 7-4 lead in set one and again at 11-10 before Charleston finished with a 15-4 run to end the set.

In set two, the Eagles rallied from an early 12-4 deficit to cut the set to 20-17 after five straight points, two coming from kills by Romero and Soto, but Charleston was able to hold on for the win.

Against Adelphi, the Eagles fell, 23-25, 18-25, 17-25. 

Izabella Rae had 13 assists, while Alyssa Groves had 19 digs. McCauley added seven more kills on the day.

In a tightly contested first set, after trailing by as much as 18-11, the Eagles cut the deficit to 24-23 after scoring 11 of 14 points as Datari Mathis had two kills and Niah Mesidor had one during the stretch. However, the Panthers, would win the set on a kill from Katie Schloss.

After trailing early in set two, the Eagles rattled off five straight points to take a 12-10 lead behind two aces from Soto. However, with the set knotted up at 18-18, the Panthers scored the final seven points to take the 2-0 match lead.

Up next, the Eagles are back at it on Saturday against Queens College in Flushing, NY at 12:30 p.m.
