Waterbury, Conn. – The Post University softball team dropped a pair of games to the University of Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon at LaMoy Field. The Eagles dropped game one, 9-0, and game two, 13-10.
In the game two loss, the Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game on a two-run double by Carli Perruso.
After the Purple Knights retook the lead, on a solo homer from Taylor Yates, the Eagles bats erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third, two of them coming on a two-run single from Kasey Jusino, giving the Eagles a 4-3 lead. Samantha Riccardulli would add a sacrifice fly in the inning as well as a run on an error off the bat of Courtney Brobst.
With the Eagles leading 6-4 heading to the bottom of the fourth and the bases loaded, Jusino hit a grounder to the pitcher, which scored Caitlin DeAngelis who beat the throw home. After the catcher threw the ball away, two more runs crossed the plate, giving the Eagles a 9-4 lead. Julianna Cicala would add an RBI on a fielder's choice, giving the Eagles a 10-4 lead.
However, the Purple Knights scored five in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Samantha Schiebe, making it a 10-9 game. In the seventh, Bridgeport would take the lead on a Meg McFarland two-run double and added two more insurance runs.
Jusnio was 1-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. DeAngelis was 2-for-4 with two runs. Bailee Zaccaro and Allyson Wallauer each scored two runs. Perruso was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In game one, the Eagles were held hitless by Bridgeport's Katie Burawski. The Eagles did have two runners reach base in the bottom of the seventh inning, but were unable to get a run across.
Prior to the game, seven seniors were honored as part of senior day as Leyri Rivera, Rianne Mayer, Jazmin Andrews, Zaccaro, Wallauer, Brianna Koref and Kasey Jusino were all recognized.
Post sits at 18-18 on the season and heads back to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play as the Eagles host Nyack on April 26 in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. in the CACC finale. The Eagles currently sit in fourth place in the CACC.
