Waterbury, Conn. – The Post University baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader against Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium, winning 5-4 in game one before dropping game two, 11-2.
With the split, the Eagles are now 6-16 overall and 2-1 in the CACC. Goldey-Beacom is now 10-17 overall and 1-1 in the CACC.
The Eagles got out of a bases loaded no-out jam in the top of the first surrendering just one run before answering with two in the bottom of the inning. The first run came on an RBI double from Hunter Keller that scored Michael Pavelchak, who led off the inning with a single. Keller advanced to third on the throw and would be driven in by Jimmy Brennan on a sacrifice fly to left to put Post up, 2-1.
After a scoreless second inning between the teams, the Eagles rallied for three runs in with two outs in the third as Keller and Brennan both singled to left before Robert Olah hit a rocket over right field for his fifth home run of the season, giving the Eagles a 5-1 lead.
The Lightning scored two of their own on a home run in the top of the fifth by Garrett Musey to make it a 5-3 game. They scored one more in the top of the seventh and threatened for more.
With runners on first and second with two outs for Goldey-Beacom, Kyle Walker hit a hard ground ball to first off Olah's glove. The ball bounced to Hunter Keller who saw pinch runner Matthew Benner round third and make a break for home. Brenner turned back to third as Keller fired the ball to Nate Miller who tagged out Brenner to win the game for the Eagles.
Keller finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Joe Christiana earned his first win of the season, pitching five innings, giving up just three earned runs on two hits and five walks while striking out seven. Jacob Tamburrino earned his first save of the season with two scoreless innings.
In game two, the Lightning took a 4-0 lead – including two in the fifth on a home run by Johnny Kampes – to before the Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the fifth.
Jordan Glazer led off the inning with a triple. After a walk to Kelvin Gutierrez, Pavelchak singled to first, scoring Glazer to make it a 4-1 game.
However, Goldey-Beacom scored six in the top of the sixth to take a 10-1 lead. Post would score one more in the bottom of the sixth as Olah – who doubled to lead off the inning – scored on an error off the bat of Miller.
Nico Gaudio struck out a career-high ten in just five innings of work, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and two walks.
Up next, the Eagles head to Bloomfield on Wednesday, March 30 to take on the Bears for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
