Waterbury, Conn. - The Post University men's basketball team built a big early lead and held off a furious rally from the Wilmington Wildcats, as the Eagles won their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) quarterfinals game, 100-89 on Tuesday evening at the Drubner Center.
The win was the first CACC tournament win for the Eagles since the 2010-2011 season.
Conference and Defensive player of the year
Devonte McCall led the Eagles with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
D.J. Frechette had 18,
Jordan Williams had 16 points off the bench and
Abdul-Basit Ajia had a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds.
Post only trailed 2-0 during the game, and had their first double-digit lead of the game at the 10:30 mark, taking a 22-12 lead as three-pointers from, McCall, Ajia and Williams. McCall had 11 of the first 22 points for the Eagles. After having their lead trimmed to 22-15, the Eagles finished the last 7:23 of the half outscoring the Wildcats 24-8 as Frechette hit two three in the final two minutes, including one at the buzzer to give Post the 46-23 lead into the half.
Wilmington trimmed their deficit to 51-37 just 3:31 into the second half before two threes from Williams put the Eagles back up 59-39
Post led by as much as 25 in the second half after a three from
Isaiah Holmes but the Wildcats responded with a 23-6 run over the course four minutes and 13 seconds making it an 83-75 Post lead at the 3:55 mark.
It was an 84-77 Post lead when Ajia grabbed an offensive rebound off the miss and laid it in to put the Eagles back up 86-77. On the next possession, Danny Walsh of Wilmington hit a three to make it a two-possession game at 86-80. However, McCall would put a final stamp on the game on the next Post possession, with a baseline one-handed dunk and subsequent free throw that erupted the Drubner Center crowd to give Post the 89-80 lead. Wilmington cut the deficit to six points two more times in the game, but the Eagles hit nine of their final ten free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Holmes finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
David Jasson had 14 points and four rebounds on the evening.
Post outrebounded the Wildcats, 48-38 and converted 18 offensive rebounds to 33 second chance points.
It was the Eagles 20th win of the season, tying for the most in a season in program history with the 2003-04 team. Post is now 20-8 on the season. Wilmington ends their season at 11-18.
The 100 points by the Eagles were the most this season, as were their 27 free throws made.
Caleb Matthews led Wilmington with 26 points. Randy Rickards had 14 points and 17 rebounds.
