Men's Basketball Takes Home CACC North Title With Win Over Dominican

Waterbury, Conn. - For the first time since the 2007-2008 season, the Post University men's basketball team clinched the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division after defeating Dominican 75-71 on Saturday evening at the Drubner Center.

It's the third time in school history the Eagles have captured a regular season title. They also captured the title in 2003-2004 before the conference split into divisions.

It's the second time this season the Eagles took down the Chargers, who are ranked sixth in the East region. It's also the third win this season over a team in the Top 10 in their region.

The Eagles are now 18-7 overall and 14-1 in the CACC with the win. They have now won 14 of their last 15 games.

D.J. Frechette finished with 20 points and four rebounds while Devonte McCall and Abdul-Basit Ajia both finished with double-doubles. McCall had 16 points and 11 rebounds while Ajia had 11 points and 15 rebounds.

After a close first five minutes of the game, with the teams tied at 11-11, the Eagles went on a 14-0 run in under four minutes to take a 25-11 lead. During the run, the Eagles got three-point baskets from Frechette, McCall and Tyler Small.

Dominican went on a 16-4 run themselves, hitting three three-pointers themselves during the run. Post went back up by as much as eight before taking a 40-37 lead into the half.

Frechette went 7-for-9 with 16 points during the first half.

Dominican took control early in the second half, taking a 50-42 lead, capped by a three from Jalen Burgess at the 14:34 mark.

A Jordan Williams three would then spark a 16-6 run which saw the Eagles take the lead back on a layup from Isaiah Holmes.

The teams swapped leads ten times in the second half as the Eagles would take their final lead of the game on two free throws from Frechette with 45 seconds left to go up 72-71.

The Chargers (17-6, 10-5 CACC) couldn't convert on their next two possessions. The Chargers would foul McCall, who made the first free throw, but missed his second. However, he came flying in for the rebound off the miss and was fouled again, sinking the final two free throws with six seconds left, securing the win.

Post outrebounded the Chargers, 48-38. The Eagles hit 17 of their 21 free throws (81 percent) and shot 36.4 percent from three (8-for-22).

David Jasson finished with 11 points, three rebounds and three steals.

Burgess finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for Dominican. Justin Copman had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Up next, the head to Caldwell to take on the Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 23.
