Wilmington, De. – Devonte McCall scored a team-high 26 points and had four blocks as the Post University men's basketball team held off a late rally from Goldey-Beacom to defeat the Lightning, 83-82 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game on Wednesday evening.
The Eagles have won 13 of their last 14 games and are 17-7 overall and 13-1 in the CACC.
Late in the second half, the Eagles took a four-point lead on an
Isaiah Holmes layup to put Post up 81-77 with 2:12 remaining.
On the next possession, Goldey-Beacom cut the lead back down to two points on a layup from Juran Ligonde with 1:39 left.
After two free throws from McCall on the next possession to put the Eagles back up 83-79, the Lightning answered with a layup from Nazim Derry.
Post did not score on the next possession, giving Goldey-Beacom a chance to tie to take the lead. Goldey-Beacom's Mekhi Collins was fouled underneath the basket with 1.5 seconds left. Collins missed the first and made the second. The Eagles were fouled with 0.2 seconds left, effectively ending the game.
The Eagles went into the second half leading 43-38 and would take their first double-digit lead after a three from
David Jasson put Post up 50-40. They'd take their biggest lead of the game at 60-48 when
Derrick Thomas II hit a three at the 15:17 mark.
Post shot 66.7 percent (14-for-21) from the field in the second half as McCall, Holmes and Jasson each scored nine points in the final 20 minutes of the game.
In the first half, the lead changed hands seven times until the Eagles used a 15-3 run to take a 32-24 lead at the 5:57 mark. McCall scored five points during the run, and
Abdul-Basit Ajia scored the first four points of the run. McCall went 7-for-9 from the field in the first half for 17 points.
The Eagles shot 64.7 percent (33-for-51) from the field, their best shooting performance of the season and the first time cracking 60% shooting this season.
Holmes and Jasson both finished with 13 points.
Tyler Small scored 11, hitting all five of his field goal attempts.
Ajia scored eight points to go with seven rebounds and four steals.
Ligonde led Goldey-Beacom (12-12, 8-7 CACC) led the Lightning with 25 points.
Up next, the Eagles host Dominican (17-5, 10-4 CACC) at 3 p.m. on Feb. 19. A win would give the Eagles the outright regular season CACC North Division title.
