Orangeburg, N.Y. – The Post University men's basketball team lost in the final seconds, 73-71 to Dominican University of New York in a tightly contested Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division matchup.
The Eagles are now 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the CACC. The Chargers move to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the CACC.
Isaiah Holmes led the Eagles with 16 points, while
Tyler Small had 15.
Collins Onyeike chipped in with 12 and
Abdul-Basit Ajia had a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds.
Down 67-60 with 5:44 left, the Eagles mounted a rally with a 9-2 run capped by a dunk from Ajia to tie the game at 69-69. Holmes had four points in the stretch.
The two teams traded a pair of free throws in the final minute, but on the final possession for Dominican, Joshuel White missed a layup which was rebounded by Seth Sharif-Brown, who put the ball back in to give Dominican the 73-71 lead with three seconds left and the win.
In the first half, the Chargers led by as much as six points at 18-12, but a 20-7 stretch by the Eagles gave them their biggest lead of the game at 32-25 with 6:10 remaining in the half. Onyeike, Holmes and Small led the way with five points apiece in the run. The Eagles' lead was cut to 32-31, but three-pointers from Onyeike and
David Jasson put the Eagles back up 38-32 with 2:54 remaining.
The Chargers, however finished on 10-2 run to take a 42-40 lead into the half.
The teams exchanged leads ten times in the second half, with no one leading by more than three points until the 6:18 mark when the Chargers took a 64-60 lead.
The Eagles converted 18 Dominican turnovers to 19 points.
Holmes has now scored in double figures in seven of the eight games this season. For Ajia, it was his fourth double-digit rebound performance of the season.
Jaden Honis led the Chargers with 19 points. Justin Copman had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
