Shelton, CT – The Post University men's hockey team scored three goals in the first period, but lost a 5-3 game to Assumption University in a Northeast-10 (NE10) matchup at The Rinks at Shelton.
Post is now 3-11 on the season and 2-6-0 in the NE10. Assumption is now 8-6-0 overall and 5-3-0 in the NE10.
Nick Weber got the Eagles scoring going in the first with his team-leading sixth goal of the season stealing the puck on the opposite blue line and going on a breakaway, taking a wrist shot that went past Assumption goaltender Drew Benedict to make it a 1-0 game at the 7:24.
Just 61 seconds later,
Niko Grollman scored his fifth goal of the season during a power play when Weber passed the puck to
Tommy Buis whose shot was stopped by Benedict. Grollman gathered the puck in front of the net and put it past Benedict to make it a 2-0 game.
Assumption got on the board at the 16:25 mark as Ronny Paragallo scored the first of his two goals, taking an open shot from the blue line that went over the left shoulder of Post goaltender
Drew Blodgett to make it a 2-1 game.
Hugh McGuigan would then score his first career goal on a power play, deflecting a shot from
Nick Brewer to make it a 3-1 game at 17:55.
Jacob Howell also earned an assist on the goal.
The Greyhounds took the lead in the second, scoring three goals, including a second from Paragallo on a power play, making it a 4-3 game going into the third. Camron Roberts also scored on a power play for Assumption. Christopher Stalmok added the other goal for Assumption.
The third period remained scoreless until the 19:33 mark when Assumption's Collin Montgomery scored on an empty net for the final goal of the game.
Blodgett Finished with 40 saves on the day.
Weber led the way with five shots for the Eagles, while
Conner Murray and
Ryan Cardow each had four.
For Weber, it was the fifth game this season he has had at least two points registered.
The game featured 24 penalties and 87 faceoffs, with Post taking the advantage, 54-33.
Connor Barter was 11-7 in the circle, while Weber was 9-2.
Paragallo also added an assist on the day for Assumption.
The Eagles get a long break and will return to action on Friday, Jan. 6 when they play on the road against SUNY Morrisville at 7 p.m.
