Shelton, CT – A wild second period and a clutch save in the final seconds of the game gave first-year head coach
Tim Richter his first career win as the Post University men's hockey team defeated Saint Anselm, 4-3 in the Northeast-10 season opener on Friday evening at the Rinks at Shelton.
After a scoreless first period, the floodgates opened in the second as reigning NE10 Player of the Year Andrew Andary gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead at the 4:21 mark.
Just over a minute later, the Eagles scored their first goal of the season as
Niko Grollman played the faceoff forward at the endzone faceoff circle, and put a shot past Saint Anselm goaltender, Nick Howard to tie the game, 1-1.
Before anyone could catch their breath, two goals were scored in the next 61 seconds. First, Post's Nick Brewer stole a pass at the blue line and ripped it from the left side, giving Post a brief, 2-1 lead. Moments later, the Hawks tied the game up on a goal from Garrett Alberti to tie the game, 2-2.
Post scored the final goal of the period at 9:41, as Trey DeLoury hit a shot just in front of the blue line on a pass from Nick Weber for the Eagles' first power play goal of the season, giving them a 3-2 lead.
After Saint Anselm tied the game at 7:32 in the third, Weber scored what would end up being the game winner at 14:27, as Weber raced up the ice, weaving through the Saint Anselm defense, and taking a shot blocker side high past Howard, putting the Eagles up, 4-3.
Saint Anselm pulled Howard in the final minute, leading to a 6-on-4 opportunity with 20 seconds left. The Hawks' Jack Murphy took a shot in front of the blue line that was stopped by Drew Blodgett, but the rebound went to Tommy Schwartz right in front of the net, but a sprawling Blodgett stopped the shot with 0.7 seconds left on the clock, securing the victory in a wild final minute.
The win marked the first time the Eagles defeated Saint Anselm in their 12-game series history.
Blodgett finished with 29 saves on the day, including 14 in the final period.
Howard finished with 28 saves for Saint Anselm.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. at the Rinks at Shelton.
