Waterbury, CT - The Post University men's basketball team rallied from a six point deficit to force overtime, but lost in the extra frame to Saint Thomas Aquinas College (STAC), 83-74 on Tuesday evening at the Drubner Center.
Post is now 3-2 on the season, while STAC is now 4-1.
The Eagles trailed, 69-63 with 2:17 left before
D.J. Frechette hit a three to make it a 69-66 game. A layup from Quest Harris followed by a free throw from Abdul-Basit Ajia with 1:09 remaining was enough to tie the game to send into overtime.
In overtime, the Spartans scored the first five points, and never trailed as Antonio Vendola scored five points, while Kyle Jones scored four in the final five minutes.
In the first half, the Eagles got out the gate quickly, jumping out to a 12-3 lead, as
Isaiah Holmes and Frechette each hit a three, forcing the Spartans to call a timeout. STAC rallied to take a 27-22 lead before
Harrison Warnock and Frechette made back-to-back buckets, cfollowed by two free throws from Holmes to give Post a 28-27 lead with 1:51 remaining. The Spartans scored the final three points of the half, taking a 31-28 lead.
The two teams didn't have much separation throughout much of the second half, trading the lead three times early on, with no one holding more than a two possession lead throughout. Post took their final lead of the game at 61-59 after two free throws from Frechette with 4:51 remaining. Frechette kept the Eagles in the game in the second half, going 3-for-6 from three to score 14 of his team-high 19 points. The play of Collins Onyeike played dividends in th e second half scoring eight of his season-high 13 points to go with a steal and a block.
Holmes had 13 points and four rebounds. Warnock had ten points and nine rebounds and Collins Onyeike finished with three blocks. Ajia finished with a team-high ten rebounds to go with six points. Ajia has three double digit rebound games this season and 18 for his career.
Jamal Barnes led STAC with 19 points, including 5-for-10 from three-point range. Vendola had 16.
Up next, the Eagles head to Bentley to take on the Falcons on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 5 p.m.
