Waterbury, CT – The Post University men's basketball team opened up its home season with a bang, and then eight more bangs, making nine three-pointers in an 88-69 rout of Saint Anselm on Wednesday evening at the Drubner Center in front of a packed crowd.
Tyler Small led the Eagles with 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting, including 4-for-5 from three and Isaiah Holmes and D.J. Frechette each scored 17.
The Eagles never trailed, as Frechette opened up the game with a three on the first possession of the game. After the Hawks tied it briefly on a three on the next possession, the Eagles went on a 7-2 run after a jumper from Small, a layup from Holmes and another three from Frechette.
The Hawks stuck around as a three from Zac Taylor cut the Eagles lead to 16-12, but a layup from Quest Harris and a three from Small put the Eagles back up 21-12 with 13:08 remaining in the half.
Saint Anselm once again cut the lead to 30-27 on a three from Jadon Archer, and the Eagles answered with seven straight, including a layup and aa three from Small to make it 37-27, forcing Saint Anselm to call a timeout. Post went up 45-32 at the break.
The lead never got into single digits for the Eagles in the second half, leading by as much as 28 as they shot 17-for-32 from the field (53.1 percent), including 4-for-10 from three and holding the Hawks to 40 percent on 12-for-30 shooting in the second half.
For the game, the Eagles shot 53.7 percent on 36-for-67 from the field. The Eagles forced 18 turnovers leading to 22 points and dominated in the paint, outscoring the Hawks, 38-20 and winning the battle on the boards, 39-28.
Abdul-Basit Ajia had six points to go with a team-high 12 rebounds. Harrison Warnock had six points and six rebounds. Harris had seven points to lead all Eagles off the bench.
The Eagles have won the last three matchups against Saint Anselm by an average of 11.3 points.
Miles Tension led all Hawks in scoring with 26, hitting five of his nine attempts from three.
